A group show focused on the “elements of art” that create an original composition: line, colour, shape, texture, form, and value.

In every original artwork there is original mark making. Whether it’s broad strokes, fine lines, expressive splashes, or heavy texture, the marks of an artist are unique and personal. Every detail traces the artist’s process and how they have worked the surface of their chosen material. These details can provide a roadmap to how the work was created, if you know where to look. With media ranging from acrylic to mixed media to 3D printing, this eclectic exhibition will showcase a variety of marks as unique and individual as a fingerprint. Let’s get into the nitty gritty of these original pieces and delve into the practices of these local established artists.

Opening on Saturday, July 20 from 12-4 pm at the gallery, this exhibition will explore the expressionist practices of 8 of our artists. New work and current collection pieces will be on display.

About the Artists

Exhibiting artists include: Carole Arnston, Meredith Bingham, Kathryn Doner, Nelson EOB, Tom Kerwin, Peter Kirkland, Tyler Matheson, and Paige Ring. All artists are well-established in the Canadian market. Their styles range from abstract expressionist to floral impressionism to structured cityscapes.

Mark Making is part of Crescent Hill’s summer programming for 2024. Please watch for their August exhibition, Narrative Nuance, opening Saturday, August 17 from 12-4pm at the gallery.

Visual storytelling has always been a function of art; telling rich stories of society, culture, history, and contemporary thought. These stories may be obvious in the arrangement of figures or symbols, or they could be more deeply hidden, awaiting discovery. They can be suggested through mood, palette, media, atmosphere, and iconography. These visual works reflect human history, experiences, and aspirations that can be read across time, language, and culture. Narrative art can also provide a window into the lived experience of an artist or community, it can connect and create conversation around complex ideas, and even shift the way we think.

Narrative Nuance is a celebration of this narrative tradition in original art. Please join us for the opening event on Saturday, August 17, 12-4 pm.
