Overview

Our final Decorative Arts & Design Auction of the year opens the door to a Cabinet of Curiosities. Spanning a wide range of cultures and historical eras, highlights from this auction include an important letter by Mahatma Gandhi; Islamic and Middle Eastern pottery; pre-Columbian pottery from Central and South America; a good collection of engraved powder horns from the French, Indian and American Revolutionary Wars; and early NASA lunar photographs.

The auction also includes an assortment of antique cameras, pistols, swords, knives, daggers, maps and fossils, as well as a variety of other curious objects.

For those of us who haven’t been able to travel of late, the Cabinet of Curiosities will take you around the world and back in time – no face mask required.

A Letter from Mahatma Gandhi

Featured Lot:

Lot 1 – Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi) (1869-1948) Letter Signed, To Diwan Sir Mirza Ismail, Peshawar, May 8, 1938

The letter is dated May 8, 1938 and was dictated by Gandhi to Mahadev Desai, another important figure in Indian’s freedom movement, who served as Gandhi’s secretary. It expresses Gandhi’s personal thoughts about a tragic, seminal moment in India’s struggle for independence from British colonialism.
