The Satellite Video Exchange Society (VIVO Media Arts Centre) seeks a dynamic, initiative-taking, and community-minded leader with non-profit arts management experience for the full-time permanent position of General Manager.
Organization Description
The Satellite Video Exchange Society (VIVO Media Arts Centre) is a Vancouver-based, charitable, non-profit, artist-run media arts centre that encourages and directly supports the creation, production, education, exhibition, distribution, and appreciation of media works by independent artists and experimental, community-based producers and activists. We provide a dynamic artistic program that includes exhibitions, performances, lectures, workshops, residencies, historical archives and access to contemporary research materials. We are dedicated to nurturing past, present and future media arts discourses and communities through equitable and public access to resources for preservation, production and dissemination.
Position Description
The General Manager (GM) is a key member of VIVO’s leadership team, working with the Board of Directors and Staff to set and implement strategic organizational goals and oversee general operations. The GM is responsible for providing organizational stewardship with regards to the development and assessment of administrative procedures and internal communications. Areas of oversight and accountability include VIVO programs, finances, operating grants, relationships with funders and stakeholders, human resources, facilities and infrastructure, and special projects as they arise.
Responsibilities
- Understand, develop, and implement VIVO policies and procedures in consultation with the Board of Directors and Staff, as they relate to organizational, operational, and departmental needs
- Work with the Board of Directors and Staff to develop a 3-to-4-year vision and plan for the organization and review the plan annually
Oversee the day-to-day operations and long-term operational planning of the Centre:
- Provide leadership in a highly collaborative role, working in consultation with the Board of Directors and Staff to achieve VIVO’s vision and mission, in alignment with any active strategic plans
- Chair bi-weekly Staff meetings and meet monthly one-on-one with Staff, work collaboratively with Staff to oversee VIVO’s operations and ensure departmental accountability to the organization
- Determine the areas of programming activity and high-level resource allocation (such as staffing) required for development and delivery oversight of programming, in consultation with the Programming Committee and the Board of Directors, and with consideration of the budget
- Develop and maintain an annual operating budget, balance and update cash flow, and report regularly to the Finance Committee and Board
- Work with the Finance Committee in preparation for the annual External Audit, and liaise with the External Auditor as needed
- Develop and oversee departmental budgets in collaboration with department Staff
- Coordinate, submit, and report on all operating grants in collaboration with department Staff, as well as with special project grants that fall outside the purview of individual departments
- Provide HR oversight in collaboration with the HR Committee, participate in hiring decisions, and independently supervise and mentor staff as well as conduct annual staff evaluations
- Oversee and participate in daily facilities maintenance and upgrades, in consultation and negotiation with the landlord and in adherence to the terms of VIVO’s lease and city by-laws
- Work with the Facilities Committee to consider VIVO’s ongoing physical space needs, and develop a strategy for VIVO’s future infrastructure needs
As the main staff liaison to the Board of Directors, ensure transparent communication, work to build the staff/board connection, provide expertise to the board, and support the Board and its committees:
- Facilitate policy development and implementation through participation in Board committees as needed and board meetings
- Facilitate reporting of operations to Board
- Work with the Staff and Board to ensure financial and risk management controls are in place and that VIVO meets all governance and reporting requirements
- Work with the Board to ensure compliance with the BC Societies Act, Canada Revenue Agency, WorkSafe BC and all applicable agencies and laws
Act as key spokesperson representing VIVO externally:
- Develop community and member relations and promote VIVO locally, nationally and internationally
- Act as liaison and maintain relationships with funding bodies
- Facilitate stakeholder engagement, build consensus and communicate effectively
- Develop organizational resources such as partnerships, community relations, and project funding
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in communications, media arts/contemporary arts, art history, arts/non-profit management (or equivalent)
- Excellent organizational, verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong commitment to community development and principles of social justice; knowledge of diverse cultural and social practices
- Strong knowledge of federal, provincial, and municipal arts funding agencies, programs, and procedures
- Proven ability to write and manage operating and project budgets, reports, grants and proposals
- Familiarity with non-profit and charitable governance (including compliance with CRA regulations)
- Experience with organizational policy development and strategic planning
- Experience managing large and complex projects involving multiple actors/collaborators
- Experience working in administrative and management capacities and providing HR oversight
- Experience working with, and reporting to a Board of Directors
- Experience working with artist-run centres, collectives, or community-based organizations
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, set and meet deadlines, work under pressure, and exercise sound judgment in setting priorities
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, social media, content management software and other basic software/apps
