Please join Artspace on Friday May 24, 2019 from 7 to 10pm for the opening of jibwaa aawang/miiniwaa nongwa/baamaa pii, an exhibition of work by Tia Cavanagh.

jibwaa aawang/miiniwaa nongwa/baamaa pii – the approximate translation of which is “before a certain time/this one now, eventually/in a while” – is an exhibition of recent work by multi-disciplinary artist Tia Cavanagh. Cavanagh’s creative lens is informed by her Indigenous, female identity and her work challenges both the historical and contemporary treatment of Indigenous women by settler colonial society. The work in jibwaa aawang/miiniwaa nongwa/baamaa pii subverts gender roles imposed by settler worldviews and confronts the legacy of Canada’s colonial system.

Bio
Originally from the northern shores of Lake Huron in Ontario, Tia Cavanagh has lived and studied in Havelock, Norwood, Peterborough, Montreal, and Toronto. Achieving her BFA at OCAD University, she now studies at Trent University working on her Masters degree in Canadian and Indigenous Studies. Cavanagh is a multi-disciplinary artist who uses materials such as paint, wood, fabrics, sculpture, and projection. For her, storytelling, process, discovery, and new meaning are at the core of art making. With these aspects at the root, she continues to explore approaches and understanding through the creative lens of an Indigenous woman drawing upon Indigenous research methodologies.
