Imagery of urban and rural landscapes are recorded through long exposure pinhole photography. Weeks to months of diurnal sunlight and fleeting winter conditions leave their impressions in a silver-gelatine paper emulsion. Unexpected influences of environment, light, colour, space, and time are revealed, providing an opportunity to re-interpret the photographic print.
Peter Friedrichsen, Cape Hurd Wetland No. 2 (2022)
A multitude of pinhole cameras were left outdoors for extended periods over the winter of 2021, 2022. Imagery from the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula, and Toronto’s Don River Valley are presented. Solar cycles of mid-winter are captured and altered by environmental conditions of wind, rain, frost, ice, and dust. Integrated over time, the photo-chemistry and environmental effects converge unpredictably, imbuing an ethereal aesthetic to the final print.
The imagery invites questions of permanence and impermanence; how will these lands change over time under our near permanent sun? Can we find an equilibrium with the natural world that is sustainable?
