New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) invites artists of all ages and nationalities to submit works on the theme Transformations for consideration in New Adventures in Sound Art’s 2020 programming.

One definition of Transformation is: a marked change in form, nature or appearance. This can be seen in the numerous changes we have been experiencing over the last 10 years in how media artists have used technological advances to create works of art that reflect the transformation of our planet, human experience, social changes, ecological changes caused by overextended use of natural resources, and how technological advances have changed how we experience art. This also applies just as much to media artists who are using old technologies in new ways to transform the use and/or perception of how art is experienced.

For its 2020 programming, NAISA is interested in submissions of work that address the ideas related to the theme Transformations and creative ways that this theme can be explored. Preference in programming will be given to works that respond in some way to the theme Transformations. Individual interpretations or variations on the theme are encouraged, but should be realized with sound as the primary component. NAISA would also like to encourage artists to submit works on the theme for performance, interactive installation exhibit, audio-visual screening, radio or internet broadcast, telematics, VR/gaming, mobile experiences and any other emerging or alternative formats that include sound as a primary element.

Please complete in full the online submission form and upload your support materials by midnight on June 24, 2019. Note: there is a $5 submission fee in order to defray the cost of processing the submissions. All works chosen for presentation will receive an artist fee. Only those artists being considered for presentation will be contacted.

2) Listen In
     NAISA Spring Interactive Group Exhibition

Listen In includes two interactive works that give the opportunity to the participant to both broaden their understanding of the soundscapes of faraway places, places that they may not have been exposed to at any time in their lives and to focus on the sounds rather than solely the sites of a place. Each of the works do this in very different ways: Listen(n): Embodied Sonic Experiences is a virtual reality nature experience that provides full 360 spherical images and ambisonic sounds of protected ecosystems in Arizona, California, Mexico and Germany. The radio aporee Geomixer uses an online map to mix soundscape recordings captured globally by hundreds of volunteers and professionals.

Listen(n): Embodied Sonic Experiences

Listen(n) is a virtual reality work in which users look around the environments wearing a virtual reality headset as if truly present in a landscape. As the user shifts around the spatial audio imaging adjusts to match visual orientation. The Listen(n) Project pursues questions about the role and function of sound and the perception of sound for a deeper understanding of place, presence, belonging and sustainability issues

Radio apogee Geomixer by Udo Noll
April 4 – May 31, 2019, Thursday to Monday, 10 am to 4 pm

The radio aporee Geomixer uses a web browser for listeners to access a public archive of world wide soundscape recordings made globally by hundreds of volunteers and professionals. The radio aporee platform invokes experiments at the boundaries of different media and public space. Within this notion, radio means both a technology in transition and a narrative. It constitutes a field whose qualities are connectivity, contiguity and exchange. Concepts of transmitter/receiver and performer/listener may become transparent and reversible.

3) Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art

NAISA is proud to announce the 21st annual edition of the Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art at the NAISA North Media Arts Centre in South River. Featured this year are interactive installations by Stephanie Castonguay and Sonia Paço-Rocchia, community workshops using discarded materials with Constanza Piña and Mark Sepic as well as performances by these four artists and more.

Elektrik Bugs by Stephanie Castonguay
June 21 – July 22, 2019, Thursday to Monday, 10 am to 4 pm

Elektrik Bugs is a sound and light installation created from an electronic workshop with children where they experiment with the concept of how sound waves are transformed into electric signals, allowing this energy to travel through light and be converted back into sound by the means of an amplified solar panel.

The BlackFly-DroneMachine by Constanza Piña
Workshop June 29 – 11 am to 3 pm; June 30 – 12 pm to 3 pm, $30/person or $50/family
Performance – June 30 at 3 pm, Pay By Donation

The BlackFly-DroneMachine is an electronic device that amplifies buzzing sounds from inside a jar. These sounds could be flies, vibrating motors or fans. Local residents of all ages can participate in donating small electronics, performing with the devices and in building them. The presentation is an outdoor collective drone concert. During the performance the devices are each rotated on sticks to create an overall sense of the sounds randomly rotating in the air.

Junkestra by Mark Sepic
July 27 – Aug 5, Thursday to Monday, 10am – 4pm

Junkestra is a sound installation made from recycled objects by Mark Sepic in collaboration with children participating in the Near North Enviro-Education Centre’s summer camp program. NAISA welcomes donation of any objects that make interesting sounds and have lived out their domestic usefulness.

Lames @ NAISA by Sonia Paço-Rocchia
Aug 8 – Sept 29, Thursday to Monday, 10am – 4pm

Lames @ NAISA is an interactive installation for an ensemble of automated musical saws. The piece is a sonic story about what it feels not to walk on the beaten track, the anxiety and the liberty it gives. The composition follows paths that are chosen depending on how the visitors position themselves in the room.

The BlackFly-DroneMachine is an electronic device that amplifies buzzing sounds from inside a jar. The presentation is an outdoor collective drone concert with community participation. During the performance the devices are each rotated on sticks to create an overall sense of the sounds randomly rotating in the air.

Junkestra by Mark Sepic
July 27, drop-in performance jams with artist, 11am – 3pm

On July 27 join Mark Sepic and jam with him on the sculpture – Junkestra – made from locally discarded materials.

Double-Tranchant @ NAISA by Sonia Paço-Rocchia
Sep 27-29, 2019, 11 am to 3 pm, FREE

Double-Tranchant @ NAISA is a drop-in live performance by Sonia Paço-Rocchia that will take place during Culture Days weekend using musical saws and other instruments inspired by objects that can cut. The performance is a commentary on the contrast between the brute, the sharp and the flexible, the fascinating.
