New Adventures in Sound Art is pleased to launch the 18th edition of its Deep Wireless Festival that opens with Art’s Birthday events on January 17 – 20 and continues until April 1, 2019. Deep Wireless is a celebration of Radio and Transmission Art presented by New Adventures in Sound Art that includes performances, special radio broadcasts, artist residencies, and workshops.

anyWare is an Internet of Things distributed sculpture comprised of two identical objects and a third virtual online portal that are individually connected to the Internet and mirror each other. The objects simultaneously respond to people who interact directly with them, as well as allow them to interact with each other through the sculptures. Structuring these interactions are a number of games and puzzles for people to play/solve, either individually or collaboratively. The objects transform in the experience of exploration (either with one person or potentially with many people) and in so doing reveal different levels of interactivity and aesthetic experience.

Journey in your mind to a place ‘off the beaten track’ and explore an eclectic range of radio and sound art from around the world while sitting at one of NAISA’s Café tables. NAISARadio Café is a curated listening experience delivered through radio receivers on café tables. The broadcast will consist of works made by artists from Asia, Europe, the middle East, and across Canada who have responded to NAISA’s 2019 programming theme of Off the Beat(en) Track.

Interactive Exhibition and Sound Hunt

Our mobile devices track our movements, allowing corporations to predict our behavior. The work Immobile Deviceprovides reason to put our phones down and allow our senses to meander down a different path, leading us away from the conventions of high technology and towards new conceptions of connectedness. After exploring Immobile Device during Family Day weekend, Josh Gumiela will lead you on an electromagnetic sound hunt to uncover electromagnetic sounds that exist in many other common electronic devices.

NAISA will be open everyday during March Break with family friendly activities and performances that highlight radio and transmission art: be your own radio announcer; tell a story; play a touch board instrument that you create; and listen to artist performances at various times during the afternoon.

4) Call for Applications: The Bentway: Sound & The City

New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) encourages artists in the Greater Toronto Area to submit residency proposals to The Bentway Conservancy for their inaugural Artist Residency program. The inaugural artist residency will focus on the acoustic environment of The Bentway. The selected artist or collective will be asked to explore The Bentway as an instrument, and to experiment with the varied sonic environments along its length. New Adventures in Sound Art Artistic Director will mentor the selected artist or collective and provide key expertise throughout the process.

5) Sound Camp Soundscape Workshop

After the stillness of winter, springtime in the Almaguin Highlands awakens the ears to a suddenly active soundscape of birds, frogs and the drumming of the ruffed grouse. The first weekend of May provides an exciting opportunity for nature-lovers, soundscape recordists and birders a chance to enjoy this awakening of the soundscape. Events include a soundscape concert with a new work by Andra McCartney, a Saturday “dawn chorus” sound walk, a hands-on workshop on soundscape recording, editing and mixing, and for those not able to travel to the Almaguin Highlands, a 24-hour online broadcast of the soundscape from Warbler’s Roost in Lount Township on NAISA Radio.
