NAISA’s fall SOUNDplay Festival, established in 2002, is a meeting point for experimentation in sound art and new media, encouraging new avenues for exploration. SOUNDplay 2019 includes exhibitions, performances, screenings, artist talks and workshops and this year features works by artists Gordon Monahan, Geronimo Inutiq and more at the NAISA North Media Arts Centre in South River.

Kinetic Transmissions by Gordon Monahan

Kinetic Transmissions, created in 2016, uses audio signals to create kinetic movements in motors. The audio vibrations are transmitted through the motors and into resonant objects such as drums, which amplify the audio recordings. At the same time that the audio recordings are transmitted and amplified into the drums, they also cause other motors to tremble and shake in kinetic gestures. These audio-induced movements, in turn, provide kinetic motions that result in percussion events, such as motors that have bells or sea shells attached to them, or wires that play wine glasses or drums as percussion objects.

Off the Beat(en) Track video installation screening

NAISA completes its year long exploration of the theme “Off the Beat(en) Track” with a video installation screening of works exploring auditory and visual rhythms with works by Darsha Hewitt with Nelly-Eve Rajotte, Jaroslaw Kapuscinski, Myriam Boucher, Jeff Morris and an early film by Canadian animation pioneer Norman McLaren.

3) Deep Wireless Festival of Radio & Transmission Art

January 17 – March 30, 2020

A celebration of Radio and Transmission Art presented by New Adventures in Sound Art. It begins with Art’s Birthday celebrations in mid-January and continues until spring with performances, special radio broadcasts, interactive installations, and workshops at the NAISA North Media Arts Centre in South River. Deep Wireless 2020 features an installation exhibition and workshops by Michael Waterman and Jesse Stewart as well as works by Ayesha Barmania.

Ice and Stone
an exhibition of works by Michael Waterman and Jesse Stewart
As part of this exhibition, sound and media artists Michael Waterman and Jesse Stewart will be collaborating with students from South River Public School to build a set of frozen “ice” instruments that will be exhibited outdoors at the NAISA North Media Arts Centre. Also on exhibit indoors will be a series of interactive works by Waterman and Stewart that use instruments made of stone.

Radio in Transformation
NAISA’s media art lounge will include the latest in the on-going transformation of radio and transmission art with recent works selected from across Canada and around the world played back using a multi-channel system.

NAISA Radio Café
NAISA Radio Café is a curated listening experience delivered through radio receivers on café tables. The broadcast will consist of works made by artists from Asia, Europe, the middle East, and across Canada who have responded to NAISA’s 2020 programming theme of Transformation.

Re-Collect / Re-Told Your Stories of New and Old
NAISA will once again present its ongoing collection of stories as told by children, parents and grandparents in the region in this interactive exhibit matched with historic photos of South River to tell the story of our community and our place in the Near North. Come add your voice to the mix!

5) Springscapes

April 4 – May 31, 2020

NAISA will include again focus its spring exhibits on the exciting new sounds of spring in the north. Now called Springscapes, this series of exhibits, performances and workshops explores the dramatic changes that take place in the natural soundscape of the Almaguin Highlands from winter to spring. The series begins with the ‘melting’ phase of the outdoor ice/water sound sculpture by Michael Waterman and Jesse Stewart premiered during Deep Wireless and concludes with another project with the South River Public School, which is an installation created by Sandy McLennan using pinhole photography and soundscape recording. The series also includes the continuation of NAISA’s annual soundscape recording workshop during the Dawn Chorus weekend (May 1-3).
