New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) invites artists of all ages and nationalities to submit works on the theme Transformations for consideration in New Adventures in Sound Art’s 2020 programming.

One definition of Transformation is: a marked change in form, nature or appearance. This can be seen in the numerous changes we have been experiencing over the last 10 years in how media artists have used technological advances to create works of art that reflect the transformation of our planet, human experience, social changes, ecological changes caused by overextended use of natural resources, and have even changed how we experience art. This also applies just as much to media artists who are using old technologies in new ways to transform the use and/or perception of how art is experienced.

For its 2020 programming, NAISA is interested in submissions of work that address the ideas related to the theme Transformations and creative ways that this theme can be explored. Preference in programming will be given to works that respond in some way to the theme Transformations. Individual interpretations or variations on the theme are encouraged, but should be realized with sound as the primary component. NAISA would also like to encourage artists to submit works on the theme for performance, interactive installation exhibit, audio-visual screening, radio or internet broadcast, telematics, VR/gaming, mobile experiences and any other emerging or alternative formats that include sound as a primary element.

Please complete in full the online submission form and upload your support materials by midnight on June 24, 2019. Note: there is a $5 submission fee in order to defray the cost of processing the submissions. All works chosen for presentation will receive an artist fee. Only those artists being considered for presentation will be contacted.

2) Listen In
NAISA Spring Interactive Group Exhibition

Listen In includes two interactive works that give the opportunity to the participant to both broaden their understanding of the soundscapes of faraway places, places that they may not have been exposed to at any time in their lives and to focus on the sounds rather than solely the sites of a place. Each of the works do this in very different ways: Listen(n): Embodied Sonic Experiences is a virtual reality nature experience that provides full 360 spherical images and ambisonic sounds of protected ecosystems in Arizona, California, Mexico and Germany. The radio aporee Geomixer uses an online map to mix soundscape recordings captured globally by hundreds of volunteers and professionals.

Listen(n) is a virtual reality work in which users look around the environments wearing a virtual reality headset as if truly present in a landscape. As the user shifts around the spatial audio imaging adjusts to match visual orientation. The Listen(n) Project pursues questions about the role and function of sound and the perception of sound for a deeper understanding of place, presence, belonging and sustainability issues

Radio aporee Geomixer by Udo Noll

The radio aporee Geomixer uses a web browser for listeners to access a public archive of world wide soundscape recordings made globally by hundreds of volunteers and professionals. The radio aporee platform invokes experiments at the boundaries of different media and public space. Within this notion, radio means both a technology in transition and a narrative. It constitutes a field whose qualities are connectivity, contiguity and exchange. Concepts of transmitter/receiver and performer/listener may become transparent and reversible. 3) Sound Camp Soundscape Workshop Weekend

May 3 – 5, 2019

After the stillness of winter, springtime in the Almaguin Highlands awakens the ears to a suddenly active soundscape of birds, frogs and the drumming of the ruffed grouse. The first weekend of May provides an exciting opportunity for nature-lovers, soundscape recordists and birders a chance to enjoy this awakening of the soundscape. Events include a soundscape concert with a new work by Andra McCartney, a Saturday “dawn chorus” sound walk, hands-on workshops on soundscape recording, editing and mixing, and for those not able to travel to the Almaguin Highlands, a 24-hour online broadcast of the soundscape from Warbler’s Roost in Lount Township on NAISA Radio.

4) Cross Canada by Train with Andra McCartney

NAISA presents two works by Andra McCartney that were both created from radio and soundscape recordings made during cross-Canada train trips fifteen years apart. Canada Train Radio 1 is from field recordings gathered on a train trip from Toronto to Vancouver, in March 2003, carrying a radio, listening for weather, finding how train and radio move together. Canada Trainradio 2018 – waiting games and widespread smoke is created from recordings of train and radio gathered on a return trip from Toronto to Vancouver, in August 2018.

5) Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art

NAISA is proud to announce the 21st annual edition of the Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art at the NAISA North Media Arts Centre in South River. Featured this year are interactive installations by Stephanie Castonguay and Sonia Paço-Rocchia, community workshops using discarded materials with Constanza Piña and Mark Sepic as well as performances by these four artists and more.
