Lan “Florence” Yee: Just Short of Everything

January 14, 2023 to February 4, 2023
Opening reception: January 13, 2023 from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the Pierre Leon Gallery of the Alliance Française Toronto

Lan “Florence” Yee is a visual artist and serial collaborator based in Tkaronto/Toronto and Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montreal. They collect text in underappreciated places and ferment it until it is too suspicious to ignore. Just Short of Everything is an exhibition of text and textile that takes on conflicting desires and the foundations that we fall through when trying to fulfill them. The main series, Tangerine, After Grapefruit, draws from Yoko Ono’s 1964 book of instructions, now embroidered as nine large-scale ‘pages’ that were photographed and printed as booklets that the public can take home. Part homage and part contemporary re-imagining, Lan’s own renditions seek to develop a playful look into the materiality of text, authority, and (re)presentation in canonical works in art history.

Join us for an in-person reception on January 13, 2023 from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the Pierre Leon Gallery of the Alliance Française Toronto

A curatorial text by Raven Spiratos is forthcoming.

This exhibition is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts
