The Toronto Biennial of Art’s mission is to make contemporary art available to everyone. For 10 weeks every two years, local and international Biennial artists transform the city and surrounding regions with artworks, talks, and performances that reflect local contexts and pressing issues of our time. The Biennial’s free, citywide programming aims to inspire people, bridge communities, and contribute to global conversations.

Five years in the planning, the inaugural Toronto Biennial of Art launched in 2019, was a popular and critical success. The Biennial welcomed nearly 300,000 local and international visitors to 15 sites, featuring 161 artists and performers. The Biennial provided expanded views of contemporary art practice, including significant contributions by BIPOC artists and artworks, and established a legacy of free and accessible contemporary arts programming in Toronto, Mississauga, and the surrounding GTA.

Position Overview

Senior Development Officer, Corporate Partnerships & Philanthropy
Full time contract: January 2021-January 2022
Salary: $70,000-$80,000 annually

The Biennial seeks a Senior Development Officer, Corporate Partnerships & Philanthropy for its dynamic team to develop and manage new fundraising strategies, with a particular focus on the corporate sector and private philanthropy, as the organization works to launch its second edition in September 2021. This is a contract position from January 2021 to January 2022, with the possibility of an offer of extension by the Biennial.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Development Officer, Corporate Partnerships & Philanthropy is responsible for ensuring the organization raises the funds and in-kind services it requires to meet its strategic goals. The Senior Development Officer, Corporate Partnerships & Philanthropy oversees, while working closely with the Development Manager and the Development Coordinator to steward, solicit, and secure contributions from existing and new sources.

  • Oversee all fundraising strategies and targets with direct responsibility for cultivating, soliciting, retaining and upgrading new and existing corporate and private donors and foundations.
  • Lead, expand and implement all development programs, including all fundraising efforts, Donor Campaigns and Special Events in an effort to provide regular sources of income.
  • Create development plans that broaden the corporate and individual donor base and maximize investment at all gift levels.
  • Work with the Development Manger to develop a fundraising strategy to effectively raise more funds from foundations including effective retention strategies for growing a patron’s program.
  • Identify, cultivate and manage new private funding opportunities to diversify income.
  • Oversee the complete grant cycle process, including writing complex, high quality grant applications and proposals, including preparing budgets and other materials/documentation (reports, letters of intent, program briefs, etc.), managing the submission and follow-up.
  • Oversee the preparation of summaries that serve as background for executive meetings and conversations with major donors.
  • Partner with staff and Board members in development activities, effectively cultivating, soliciting, and maintaining strong relationships with individual, corporate, foundation, and government donors and sponsors.
  • Act as the spokesperson as needed, communicating the work and mission of the organization to the media, community, regional arts organizations, education institutions, businesses, foundations, government agencies, and other stakeholders including not-for-profit and corporate entities.
  • Manage a portfolio of major corporate and individual donors, supervising the stewardship and being primarily responsible for the cultivation, renewal and increasing of their support.
  • Maintain year-round communications and relationships with funders, including written reports, funder surveys and in-person meetings.
  • Integrate all donor strategies with digital platforms including social media, email, phone, etc. to build relationships with donors.
  • Oversee all day-to-day operations to ensure that donors, and other community members have a first-class experience any time they interact with the organization’s staff.
  • Create and maintain tools that accurately monitor and interpret the activity of all public sector and donor fundraising initiatives.
  • Oversee, and provide guidance to Development Manager and Development Coordinator.
  • Prepare fundraising reports for the Board of Directors.
  • Write final report detailing recommendations for enhancing the development office activities for the following event.

Desired Qualifications

  • Minimum 5-7 years of direct work experience in non-profit fundraising, grant writing, and managing donor programs.
  • Experience in securing sponsorship for events including cash and in-kind sponsors.
  • Strong working knowledge of fundraising techniques for major gifts and high-end donor acquisition and cultivation.
  • Demonstrated track record of identifying, cultivating, soliciting new business.
  • Exceptional negotiating skills and ability to diplomatically work with multiple stakeholders.
  • Very strong relationship building and management skills.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe, Salesforce and presentation and design software (InDesign an asset).
