Images Festival is seeking an Executive Director

This is an exciting opportunity to take on a significant leadership role in one of the most unique and forward thinking arts organizations in Canada. The Executive Director will work with an energetic, passionate and dedicated staff to plan and carry out an extensive festival of contemporary moving images each spring. The ED oversees human resources, development, financial management, organizational planning, community profile, and reports to the Board of Directors. This is a full-time position based in Toronto, and includes working collaboratively in a fast-paced and community-oriented environment.

Images Festival is North America’s leading presenter of contemporary and experimental moving images, and one of the most enduring and respected platforms in the world for the exhibition of Canadian and international screenings, installations and live performances. Created in 1987, Images presents work that counters dominant mainstream narratives and provides alternative ways of thinking and seeing that expand the understanding of moving image culture through programming and education-based initiatives. In April 2019, the 32nd edition of the Images Festival included 50 artists in attendance, 19 venues across Toronto, 13 exhibitions, 73 on-screen works, 5 live performances, 14 outreach events (talks, tours, workshops), and an audience of approximately 25,000 people.

Required Qualifications and Experience in:

  • Media arts presentation, film festivals and/or community-based events planning and execution;
  • Human resources, including managing and coordinating staff and/or volunteers;
  • Grant and proposal writing and reporting for arts sector and public funders in Canada;
  • Development: sponsorship, foundations, consulates, and fundraising;
  • Community building and collaborative partnerships;
  • Managing budgets and administering finances;
  • Working with a charitable board of directors;
  • Working with media arts organizations, film festivals, galleries, distributors, and other artists-run communities in Toronto, Canada, and Internationally;
  • Managing timelines, critical paths, and long-term strategic goals. Organized, self motivated, detail oriented, and ability to multitask;
  • Speaking publicly at public and private engagements;
  • Adapting to a changing work schedule which includes events, presentations and meetings throughout the year and during the festival;
  • Onsite events organizing and/or presentation logistics, and ability to provide hands-on support;
  • Computer literacy in a Mac-based environment: competent with with G-suites, Sheets, Docs, digital file management, database, and email correspondence;
  • Oral and written communication in English. Fluency in French is considered an asset;
  • University degree in Curatorial/ Film/ Contemporary Art and/or Arts Management is an asset.


Human Resources

  • Provide direction and support to the Artistic Director and Operations Manager, and seasonal festival staff, including Advertising Sales Manager, Communications Coordinator, Community Development Coordinator, Bookkeeper, Administrative Assistant, and others;
  • Manage all personnel issues including hiring, contracts, scheduling, supervision, training and performance reviews with the involvement of the Board HR committee;
  • Create and maintain a team-based environment within the office and organization.


  • Write public grant proposals and reports; including federal, provincial, and municipal government operational grants, project grants, and consulates. Maintain all relevant data and records for each grant application.
  • Ensure that the organization maintains strong, positive relationships with funders and sponsors;
  • Contribute to the development of program and project proposals for funding, in consultation with appropriate staff;
  • Work with the Board, Fundraising Committee and appropriate staff to implement strategic fundraising initiatives.

Financial Management

  • Oversee the financial and risk management of the organization in conjunction with the Board, including funding, budgeting and reporting processes;
  • Manage the financial business of the Images Festival, including, but not limited to, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, remittances and government reporting;
  • Develop an annual budget, and prepare and participate in the annual financial audit;
  • Implement a strategic business plan developed by and in conjunction with the Board.

Organizational Planning and Sustainability

  • Provide direction and support in a way that is consistent with the goals, objectives and policies established with the Board. Liaise between staff and the Board;
  • Provide leadership to the organization in developing and implementing operational plans and translating strategic and long range plans into measurable actions;
  • Oversee documents including those outlining working timelines, critical path and internal communication strategy with staff;
  • Prepare monthly reports and statements at Board meetings and provide other information as necessary to the Board of Directors. Participate at meetings of the Board, Executive Committee and other standing committees and the annual planning meeting of the Board. Assist the Chair of the Board in developing agenda and materials for Board meetings;
  • Develop, implement and maintain an artistic profile for the Images Festival, in conjunction with, the Artistic Director and the Board;
  • Advocate on behalf of the organization‚Äôs mandate and priorities with internal and external stakeholders and constituencies.

Marketing, PR, Outreach and Community Profile

  • Develop and maintain the festival‚Äôs community profile, including working with community partners, marketing, sales, publicity and promotions;
  • Communicate the strategic directions, vision and goals to appropriate internal and external stakeholders;
  • Oversee and contribute to the development and delivery of quality communication materials including, catalogue, and digital marketing;
  • Represent the Images Festival at associated meetings and public events.

Additional Info:

  • Year-round employment at the Images offices in Toronto
  • Salary is $26 hour
  • Full-time entails working 4-5 days per week
  • Includes supplementary health benefits
  • 2 weeks vacation, 2 weeks summer closure, and statutory holidays
  • Start date: August or September 2019
