We are currently seeking a driven, strategic, passionate and goal-oriented Head of Development to effectively lead and manage a comprehensive fundraising program to achieve The Power Plant’s short and long-term funding objectives, including major gifts, corporate partnerships and sponsorship, foundation finding and events.

Reporting To: Director & Artistic Director
Direct Reports: Sponsorship & Major Events Manager, Grants & Foundations Officer, Donor Programs Manager, Development Coordinator
Type of Employment: Full time, 35-hour work week
Compensation: $90,000 – $115,000 per year, including a comprehensive employee benefits package
Location: Toronto

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION:

The Head of Development will effectively lead and manage a comprehensive fundraising program to achieve The Power Plant’s short and long-term funding objectives, including major gifts, corporate partnerships and sponsorship, foundation funding, and events. The incumbent will plan and manage a team to implement a program able to sustain and strengthen The Power Plant’s relationship with existing donors and funders, and develop strategies that will attract significant new prospects to help reach the gallery’s goals.

DUTIES:

  • Provide leadership and develop strategy for increasing TPP’s financial resources through philanthropic giving to advance the broader strategic goals of the gallery.
  • Develop multi-year and annual fundraising plans and manage implementation.
  • Provide strategic oversight of all fundraising programs including major giving, corporate partnership, foundation giving and grants, annual giving and membership, fundraising events, and potential emerging opportunities.
  • Ensure all operational processes and supporting aspects of the development function are well structured and effective.
  • Manage development of fundraising goals and budget and prepare regular reports on progress to the Director.
  • In collaboration with the Director, TPP, coordinate the enlistment and management of Board and other volunteers to support the achievement of fundraising objectives.
  • Serve as a member of the senior leadership team with special regard to the coordination of resource development, engagement, communications and external relations priorities.
  • Manage four staff positions and work directly with staff on setting and monitoring performance objectives, coaching and mentoring, talent development and retention.
  • In collaboration with TPP Director, identify the optimal development structure, roles and staffing needs; recruit and hire development staff if appropriate.
  • Maintain a portfolio of minimally 50 individual major donor prospects, working in conjunction with the Director, The Power Plant to qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward gifts at the leadership ($100,000+) and major ($25,000+) giving levels.
  • Maintain a portfolio of major corporate funders, converting existing event sponsors to multi-year partners and identifying and soliciting new opportunities.
  • Strengthen the operational structure and processes for an effective major gift program, including procedures for prospect identification, moves management, stewardship and progress monitoring and reporting.
  • Conduct prospect research to identify, cultivate, and solicit new funding sources for exhibitions, programs, and other initiatives.
  • In conjunction with Director, build and maintain relationships with institutional funders.
  • Communicate with funders to inquire about new projects and follow up on the status of submitted proposals.

REQUIREMENTS & ATTRIBUTES:

  • Post-secondary degree or equivalent and a minimum of 7 years’ experience leading and executing major fundraising programs in the not-for-profit sector.
  • Proven track record of raising major gifts is a must.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to develop effective partnerships.
  • Strategic thinker, highly motivated, organized and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Good judgment and high level of discretion.
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate staff.
  • Excellent writing, presentation and computer skills.
  • Experience with fundraising databases is an asset.
  • Experience in a visual arts organization is an asset.
  • Strong interest in contemporary art and working to support TPP’s mission.
  • Availability and flexibility to work overtime hours outside of regular schedule on occasion, in order to meet deadlines and/or provide support at public events.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada. Non-Canadian applicants must have a valid employment Visa and proper documentation authorizing their ability to work in Canada.
  • This role is based in Toronto. The candidate must be able to work on site at our waterfront gallery, however a hybrid-work model could be considered.
  • The Power Plant recognizes its heightened duty to protect employees from health and safety risks during the current pandemic.
