Logics of Sense 2: Implications

Although the worlds we inhabit are invariably composed of sensations and sense-makings, it is a peculiar challenge to perceive ourselves sensing. Because our human-centred sensory habits are so difficult to discern, we can often mistake them for natural tendencies. As an attunement to the aesthetics of sensation, the exhibition Logics of Sense—presented in two parts at the Blackwood Gallery, University of Toronto Mississauga—examines sense-in-the-making, from the surface of incorporeal events to a multiplicity of decentralized perceptions, and from itinerant geo-methodologies to the various disciplinary frames and frameworks that artistic intelligence retrofits for emergent social and political realities.

Logics of Sense 2: Implications includes works by Revital Cohen & Tuur Van Balen, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, Miles Rufelds, and YangMing. Among their videos, sculptures, and screenings, visitors are implicated in both seeing like a state and sharing in ecological complicity through colonial pasts and capitalist futures. As geopolitical backstories unfold to reveal an entropic obsolescence of objects, a storm builds toward the moment of its explosive release.

Caecilia Tripp: Going Space and Other Worlding

Paris- and New York-based artist Caecilia Tripp creates immersive film, participatory performance, and sculptural installations that transgress notions of fixed identities and bounded geographies. Going Space and Other Worlding is the culmination of two years of residencies, research, and experimentation at the AGYU. Through film, performance, and sculptural installation, Tripp uses forms of reenactment and rehearsal to conjure alternative modes of freedom, utopia, and civil disobedience at the crossroads of globalization and cultural hybridity.

Jae Jarrell began working professionally on Chicago’s South Side in the early 1960s and is a co-founder of AFRICOBRA (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists). Jarrell’s works disrupt the boundaries between fashion and sculpture, merging art and design with Black liberation politics. This installation gathers sculptures, garments, and archival material, representing almost fifty years of radical practice. This exhibition is co-presented by AGYU and the Toronto Biennial of Art.

9 Bats

9 Bats builds on Jalani Morgan’s life-long love for, and personal commitment to, baseball. In a large-scale installation and photographs set at Scarborough Village Park—Morgan’s childhood baseball diamond—Morgan’s five-year old nephew Cordell embodies the character of Devon C. Jones, a fictional future Hall of Fame player. Playful, yet inherently political, 9 Bats explores both the auto-biographical and fantastical to provide content and representation for Black communities, and to continue to build a world where kids like Devon/Cordell engage at the centre, and not on the margins.
