The body of work in this exhibition comes from a fundamental question about a human being “Who am I”. Since my thesis research, I was interested in theories of subjectless subjectivity, selflessness and pure immanence in philosophy. In addition, I found myself contemplating themes of evacuation and let-it-go in religion.
My practice, essentially, tries to express the way to lose myself in order to find ‘Pure I’ and starts at the very beginning where everything was undefined in any language. I believe that everything around us in this world has a pure moment before we made a name on it or define it. The subject began with an image of the fetus in the mother, but the meaning of ‘Tae-A’ is more close to the form of exist oneself rather than the fetus. As the work progresses the shape of ‘I’ became more abstract form.
Through the ambiguity of the form, viewers are invited to entrench themselves in the work and are provided with a moment to meet their ‘Pure I’ in any shapes.
