Ars Medica: Special Issue on COVID-19
Call for Submissions
Are you a healthcare provider or allied health professional on the frontlines, a patient receiving care in the health system, or someone whose life has been changed – in great or small ways – by the ongoing global pandemic?
Ars Medica invites submissions of art and literature across a wide variety of creative genres on the subject of COVID-19. For this special issue we are looking for works on the theme of body, health, wellness, and encounters with the medical system, reflecting a range of experiences from healthcare workers to patients, family members, and observers. We want to showcase pieces that reflect the far-reaching changes brought on by COVID-19, with a focus on developing creative connections in a socially-distanced world.
We welcome submissions in the forms of written text (e.g. short stories, poetry, life writing, and essays), visual art, photography (including photos of textiles, sculpture, and other material arts), mixed media, time-based media (e.g. video, audio), and digital media (e.g. gifs, games, renderings). English is the primary language of publication for Ars Medica.
We prioritize original pieces, but would consider exceptional work previously published in a print or online publication, or on social media. If selected, we pay rates for literary works as suggested by The Writer’s Union of Canada/Union des écrivaines et des écrivains québécois for online publications. We pay CARFAC fees for all other artworks.
The special issue editorial team will review all submissions. Promising selections will be forwarded for double-blind review, however the editorial team is responsible for all final decisions. In addition to publication in our online journal, we will also feature selected works on our social media platforms and other cross-promotional efforts.

Deadline: Friday, 18 September 2020 at 11:59pm.

Ars Medica is one of Canada’s first health humanities journals. Launched in 2004, we transitioned in 2014 to a web-only format. Ars Medica provides an online venue for dialogue, meaning-making, and the representation of experiences of the body, health, wellness, and encounters within the medical system. Content includes narratives from patients and health care workers, including fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. We also include sections on writing by and about children, international health, and other voices routinely silenced in the healthcare system.
