Teresa Tam
Artist

Calgary
August 01, 2018

Teresa Tam graduated from the Alberta College of Art & Design in 2014. Her practice uses digital technology and physical labour as mediums to explore viewer engagement in familiar and personal spaces. She likes to work collaboratively, formally or informally, with artists and with audience participation and inclusion as a way to develop community, processes, and dialogue. She has recently exhibited as part of SAD LTD in The New Gallery and as Quartet in Transit in IKG LIVE 2. Her project Pseudo Café is part of this summer’s WRECK CITY Residency currently exhibiting in Calgary.

1. Tea

For its variety, subtlety, ability to be prepared without needing too much skill or resources, and its ubiquity and humbleness in multiple cultures.

2. Bootlegs & imitations

How fake things create and form our realities, especially those created out of desperation and from the scarcity of resources. While being worried if something is an imitation, also worry about what isn’t a copy of something else and why you want something to be real at all.

3. Excessive labour

As my current form of existential validity.

4. Diversities of English

How English has mutated and permeated around the world, but also in how it is understood and spoken by those who are native in different languages. Even though English is homogenizing the world, it’s interesting to watch it change in different contexts and see language purists get angry.

5. A future

Understanding and accepting that the future isn’t for me, but nonetheless still using it as a form of resistance and anti-authority.
