KAPSULA Magazine collaborates with the Art History Graduate Student Association of York University (AHGSAY) for a third time to publish papers and image-based works from the AHGSAY 2016 symposium, “Navigating the Metamodern,” which was held March 19th -20th in Toronto. Selected papers from the conference proceedings will be released in the next issue of KAPSULA, titled NAVIGATING THE METAMODERN (with the magazine’s signature “all-caps”), on Friday, June 17th.

In this special issue of KAPSULA, writers, artists, and researchers from the 15th annual AHGSAY symposium challenge the history and application of ‘metamodern’ as a term to define our present milieu. With focus on alternative modes of story-telling, new ecologies, post-photography, and affective engagement in community-based artworks, the conference proceedings negotiate how to define and engage with a historical present.

As an entirely digital publication dedicated to evaluative and experimental art writing, KAPSULA provides a venue for alternative formats of documentation that step away from conventional art (and conference) publications.

Subscribing to KAPSULA is free, and accessible at: http://kapsula.ca/subscribe. Sign up to receive your issue of NAVIGATING THE METAMODERN on June 17th.

More about KAPSULA Magazine:

KAPSULA is a listserv dedicated to engaged and evaluative art writing. Entirely digital, the publication explores forms appropriate for web documents and aims to advance online art publishing.

KAPSULA is a non-profit organization run entirely pro-bono by a small but dedicated staff of arts workers.

Taking the democratized, dispersed nature of the Internet as its basis, KAPSULA offers a venue for texts that may be unsuited to more conventional publications due to unusual or critical stances, formats, or subjects. By promoting strong writing that is critical, but not cruel, KAPSULA champions art criticism relevant to readers outside the limited audience of art critics themselves.

The special issue release of NAVIGATING THE METAMODERN marks a new chapter for KAPSULA as the magazine transitions to a new publishing model in September, but not before delivering a final farewell to three years of steady publishing. The partnership with AHGSAY will be followed by a single issue appropriately themed THE END, an exploration of “finality” in art and art criticism. Rather than releasing monthly issues on quarterly themes, KAPSULA will be publishing less frequently through partnerships and special projects. The AHGSAY partnership is emblematic of this new model and the success of KAPSULA’s community projects. Special issues of KAPSULA have been created in collaboration with OCAD University's Contemporary Art, Design and New Media Art Histories (CADN) Masters of Arts program, University of Waterloo Art Gallery, and Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography.

KAPSULA Magazine is an imprint of KAPSULA PRESS, a not-for-profit company.
