Call For Submissions: Flea Market Gallery

The Niagara Artists Centre is a not-for-profit, charitably registered collective formed by and dedicated to serving the working artists and community of Niagara. More info: www.nac.org

NAC’s Flea Market Gallery is located at the Factory Outlet Flea Market at 46 Turner Crescent, St. Catharines. During open hours every Sunday, approximately 2500 patrons visit the market, making it by far the most popular in the peninsula. NAC opened the Flea Market Gallery in an effort to reach new audiences. This modest market booth-sized gallery (8 ft by 8 ft) exhibits work by regional and national contemporary visual artists. Traditional two-dimensional work, installations, and video work are all suitable. Proposals should go beyond theoretical concerns to create a compelling visual experience for viewers who might be unfamiliar with art criticism.

Selected proposals will be exhibited for a minimum of three months. Artists must take into account that the installation, for the most part, will be presented unsupervised in a public space. Work for display must be secured, and effort may be needed to deter theft, for instance through non-inclusion of removable objects. NAC will contribute to the unique display costs associated with presenting in the Flea Market Gallery, providing insurance for work on display. Artists are paid above CARFAC recommended rates, as well as travel and art transportation costs.

This project is largely made possible through the benevolence of Kelly Foote and Scott Sweitzer of the Factory Outlet Flea Market who donated a booth for the project.

Submission Process

Please attach to your submission: your CV, a description of the proposed exhibition (one page or less), including a short artist’s statement specific to the work, and digital documentation (up to ten images) of either the proposed work if it is complete, or similar previous works/in-process documentation, as appropriate.

Proposals are accepted on an ongoing basis. Submissions can be made by email to artists@nac.org, or by mail to 354 St. Paul street, St. Catharines, ON L2R3N2. If you require the return of your support materials, please include a self-addressed envelope with postage attached.

Selection Criteria

Proposals should be original and innovative, provoking visitors to enter the booth and separate for a moment from the perspective of a shopper searching for consumer goods. Work should be accessible and approachable for the public, as flea market visitors enter from all walks of life.

Our programming committee consisting of established artists, curators, and board members familiar with national standards will weigh the merit of the proposals as well as their relevance, and the ability of the work to resonate within this particular community. The programming committee is committed to equitable representation.
