Winter Printmaking Courses & Workshops at Open Studio

An Open Studio course is the perfect gift for that creative someone in your life!

Open Studio—Canada’s leading printmaking centre— offers a variety of printmaking courses throughout the year, which are specifically designed for adults with no previous printing experience.


8-WEEK COURSES

Screenprinting – $400, includes materials
Mondays, 6:30pm - 9:30pm
January 28 - March 25 (No class February 18)

Participants will use direct stencil methods to transfer ink onto paper. This course is suitable for photo-based, hand drawn or computer manipulated imagery.

Etching - $400, includes materials
Tuesdays, 6:30pm - 9:30pm

Participants will work with copper plates to create a range of images, textures and lines. The process of aquatint, which produces a range of flat tones, will also be explored.

Lithography - $400, includes materials
Mondays, 6:30pm - 9:30pm

Participants will learn to draw and paint onto the surface of a finely ground limestone, which is then chemically processed before printing. From bold lines to subtle effects, lithography offers a wide range of mark-making possibilities.

WEEKEND WORKSHOPS

CMYK Screenprinting - $255, includes materials

Participants will learn about CMYK screenprinting, or 4-colour process printing, to convert photographic images into full-colour screenprints.

Letterpress Cards - $230, includes materials
Saturday - Sunday, 11:00am - 4:00pm

Participants will learn to print multiple impressions using a traditional Vandercook printing press. Students will explore the many possibilities of creating text and image-based multiples using lead and wood type and image blocks.

Collagraph Texture-based Printmaking - $230, includes materials
Saturdays, 11:00am - 4:00pm

Originating as collages, collagraph plates are inked and printed to create colourful and richly texture multiples. Participants will learn about plate making, inking and printing techniques and will be encouraged to experiment with non-traditional materials and methods.

3-Day Photo Etching - $375, includes materials
Saturdays, March 16, 23 and 30

Participants will learn about photo-based etching using photopolymer film as a resist. This process is suitable for transforming photographs, digital imagery or drawings into etchings.

Colour Linocut - $230, includes materials
Saturday - Sunday, 11:00am - 4:00pm

Participants will explore different lino block cutting, inking and printing techniques using oil-based inks to create images of two colours. In this direct and versatile medium the image emerges from the surface of the lino block as the lines and shapes are carved away.

4-WEEK COURSES

Screenprinting II* - $300, includes materials

Designed as an extension of Open Studio’s 8-week screenprinting course, this course builds on the fundamentals of screenprinting. Participants will focus on an independent project, while being given guidance on colour mixing, registration, and multi-layer printing.

*Students must have completed an 8-week intro to screenprinting course at Open Studio or the equivalent.

Etching II* - $325, includes materials
Tuesday, 6:30pm - 9:30pm (4-weeks)
April 2 - April 23

Designed as an extension of Open Studio’s 8-week etching course, this course builds on the fundamentals of etching. Participants will focus on an independent project, while being given guidance on multi-plate printing, colour printing and advanced aquatint.

*Students must have completed an 8-week intro to etching course at Open Studio or the equivalent.


OTHER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Open Sessions – $175 per session, materials not incl.
Wednesdays, 6:30pm – 9:30pm
Session 1: January 16 - February 6
Session 2: February 20 - March 13
Session 3: March 27– April 17

The Open Session program allows participants who have printmaking experience to work independently with minimal supervision. The program is especially useful to students who want to transition from classes to renting at Open Studio. Open Studio’s Technical Director must approve registration. Please call Open Studio at 416-504-8238 for more information.

Private Instruction – $60/hr (minimum 4hr session), materials not included
Customized sessions are arranged by our Technical Director to provide individuals with specialized instruction outside of our standard classes. A minimum deposit of $100 is required. Please call for more information.

Studio Tours and Demos
Open Studio offers a range of tours and demonstrations for post-secondary students, adult groups and corporate groups. Please call for more information.

Custom Printing
Open Studio works with artists and galleries to realize custom printing projects on a case-by-case basis. In consultation with our Technical Director, we can help determine the best means to carry out your project. Our main focus is working with traditional print practices such as etching, relief, screenprinting, lithography and letterpress. Please call for more information.
