L: Colin Miner, Catwalk I (working image), 2018, photo-litho plate and moiré pattern. Printed by Pudy Tong under the auspices of the Open Studio Visiting Artist Residency Program. R: Susy Oliveira, BeauSoleil 3, 2018, screenprint, edition of 10, 38" x 26". Printed by Meggan Winsley under the auspices of the Open Studio Visiting Artist Residency Program.

Each year Open Studio selects four professional artists with or without printmaking experience to create traditional and/or experimental works in the print medium of their choice, working collaboratively with a print media artist. The Visiting Artists Residency, in operation since 1983, is a popular program that receives applications from artists from around the world. In conjunction with the residency, each artist exhibits the work produced during their period in the Studio. The second of two Visiting Artist Residency exhibitions in 2018 will feature work by artists Colin Miner and Susy Oliveira.

The man, who day after day, took pictures of shadows
Colin Miner

In The man, who day after day, took pictures of shadows, Colin Miner draws from his lithography plate images and moiré patterns to create conversations with cats that have crossed his path while going for walks—catwalks.

BeauSoleil
Susy Oliveira

In BeauSoleil Susy Oliveira explores the lifespan and malleability of an image. Four large screenprints act as fictional relics that are meant to look like aged posters that have been forgotten over time. Working from vintage Playgirl centerfolds, the final prints are barely there, faded and imprinted with the memory of place. These prints reflect a fictional location and are worn away where the sun would have fallen day after day.

Meggan Winsley: Get it together
George Gilmour Members’ Gallery
Opening reception: Friday, October 19, 6:00 - 8:00pm
Exhibition runs until Saturday, November 17, 5:00pm

Get it together is about personal survival, putting on a good face and finding beauty in the chaos of change. Meggan Winsley uses masks and animal heads to explore therianthropy (the ability to metamorphose into other animals and other identities) and also delusion and confusion in regards to self-identity and persona. The environments in which these figures exist are abandoned and derelict, yet genuine beauty remains in the decayed remnants. It links us to a time of quality, beauty and at least the illusion of goodness – yet the disarray suggests that perhaps that time has long passed. The creatures inhabit the space and are full of strength, determination and good ole fashioned fabulousness. Tension is evoked in the viewer, wondering if it is defiance or denial on the faces that look back at them.
