GOETHE FILMS:
BAD BANKS – ARE YOU READY TO PAY?

Presented by the Goethe-Institut
October 4 + 9 + 11

GOETHE FILMS presents the exclusive Canadian premiere of the complete first season of acclaimed TV miniseries Bad Banks, starring Paula Beer (Transit; Frantz; Never Look Away).

“The opening minutes set a superior standard that endures throughout this addictive series. The female-led Billions we’ve been waiting for.” – SBS Australia

Ambitious investment banker Jana is confronted with the unscrupulous machinations of the world of finance. Her working life is determined by egotism, the pressure to succeed, and systemic machismo. She soon has to decide how far she is prepared to go for her career. The German-Luxembourgish co-production set at the heart of Europe’s financial capitals premiered at the 68th Berlinale 2018 and went on to win the Audience Award at the Kino Festival New York. Beer, who was a jury member for the 1st Cannes International Series Festival, won Best Actress at the Bavarian Television Awards, as well as the German Acting Award for her role as Jana. Bad Banks has screened in nearly 40 countries and just been renewed for a second season.

Directed by Christian Schwochow (Paula; West), starring Paula Beer, Barry Atsma, Désirée Nosbusch, Tobias Moretti, Jörg Schüttauf, Jördis Triebel, and others.

October 4, 6:30pm: Fired & Follow the Junk (100 min)
Successful junior banker Jana's world collapses: She is dismissed without notice. But she gets one last chance and receives insider information about a multi-billion dollar city development project from veteran banker Christelle Leblanc.

October 9, 6:30pm: The Man from London & Old Debts (104 min)
A protracted flu and 24/7 work take a toll on Jana. There are growing signs that Jana's former employer and Deutsche Global Invest want to merge. What is going on behind closed doors? And what does Leblanc really want?

October 11, 6:30pm: The Hardest Currency & The Lion's Den (104 min)
Jana does everything necessary in order to make the mega project "Leipzig 2025" a reality, against all odds. But the pressure increases. Investment head Fenger cannot and will not protect her any longer. Deutsche Global Invest is about to fold and Germany faces another financial crisis. Did Jana trigger it?

“Makes Wall Street’s Gordon Gekko look like an ethical banker.“ – Handelsblatt Magazine
