Montgomery's Inn 2019 Art Exhibitions

Envision your artwork displayed on the gallery walls of a busy multi-use museum! Montgomery's Inn is currently accepting applications for the 2019 exhibit cycle

About Montgomery's Inn
As part of the community since 1830, Montgomery's Inn was originally built for Thomas and Margaret Montgomery. Over the years the inn has served as a home, a place of business and a community meeting place in the heart of Etobicoke. In 1975 the restored inn was opened as a museum and today it is one of ten history museums managed by the City of Toronto. In addition to a weekly farmers' market, school programs, and special events, Montgomery's Inn has two public rooms that also function as exhibition spaces (the Community Room and the Briarly Room).

Exhibit Schedule and Costs
The 2019 exhibit schedule will include twelve juried exhibitions, one community partner show and our annual Christmas Carol exhibit by Dave Rheaume. Of the twelve juried exhibitions, ten will be two month exhibits ($300 + HST $339.00) and two will be one month exhibits in November 2019 ($200 + HST $226.00). There will be no commissions' payable for work sold. No fee is required for submitting an application. The Montgomery's Inn Art Jury will assist the Museum Program Officer in selecting the annual schedule of exhibitions from the applications received by the stated deadline. Upon acceptance, a $50 deposit will be required.

Included with Rental Fee:

  • Art insurance coverage
  • Montgomery's Inn will provide hanging equipment, assistance with artwork installation/dismantling
  • Promotion on the Montgomery's Inn website and social media channels
  • The opportunity to host an opening reception with tea and coffee provided

Application Details
We are looking for proposals that provide modern interpretation to the historical role played by Montgomery's Inn as a tavern, farm, local gathering place and community hub. We are specifically looking for exhibits that provide Montgomery's Inn with opportunities to engage with visitors and communities through a range of arts and cultural programming. Montgomery's Inn is looking to collaborate with artists who are interested in doing programming related to their exhibits for our weekend Tea Series: Tea Time at the Inn. Do you have an idea about an artist talk, workshop or family drop-in that can be connected to your exhibit? If your exhibit is selected by the jury you can discuss ideas and opportunities for public programming with the Montgomery's Inn Program Officer. Spaces for public programming are limited and will be discussed on a case by case basis and are optional for the artist. If you don't have an idea or are not able to commit to public programming your application will still be considered. Results will be emailed out in early November 2018.

About the Application
To request a Montgomery's Inn exhibitor Application Form, please contact the Museum Program Officer by phone or email at 416-394-6025 or montinn@toronto.ca.

All application forms must be submitted by the deadline: October 1st, 2018.

Forms can be filled out and submitted electronically or mailed with accompanying CDs to: Program Officer, Montgomery's Inn, 4709 Dundas Street W, Etobicoke, Ontario M9A 1A8. Please note that the multi-purpose nature of our spaces means that we cannot display sculpture, installation or 3D works of art. See terms of entry for more details.

To include with your application:

  • 10 JPEGs or PNGs (on CD or emailed) of recent work (within the last two years) that imply the general idea, theme or impression of the proposed exhibit – half (5) of the images must be of works included in the exhibition.
    • Images may not exceed 72dpi. Medium file size per image 1mb, and may not exceed 1024 x 768 pixels. RGB or grayscale only.
    • Digital Image number: number and label each image in the following format number/initials/year/title.jpeg (example- 01CC2015BlueSky.jpeg)
  • Corresponding list containing title, dimension and medium must accompany images
  • Should you wish your CD returned, please provide a self-addressed envelope

Application Review

  • All applications will be reviewed by the Montgomery's Inn Art Jury with support from Montgomery's Inn staff, and all decisions are final
  • The Jury will determine which applications to accept and which slot(s) shall be offered to the successful applicants. Please note that some months receive a higher volume of requests so an applicant may be accepted but not awarded their preferred slot.
  • If an application is not accepted, the applicant will be contacted and feedback will be provided upon request.
  • If an application is approved and the applicant is offered a slot but chooses not to accept that particular slot the approval becomes void. This means that they will not be automatically approved the following year and would be required to resubmit their application at the time of the call for artists.
