Jaime Angelopoulos and Derrick Piens: Anthropocene

August 23 to October 14, 2018

Grand Opening of New Location and Exhibition Reception:
Thursday, August 23 from 7pm – 9pm
Artists will be in attendance. Remarks at 7:30pm

Latcham Art Centre is thrilled to be celebrating our new name and new location with the inaugural exhibition Anthropocene by Jaime Angelopoulos and Derrick Piens. This exhibition brings together a selection of sculptures, paintings and drawings that explore the shared connections and concerns between their respective practices, particularly as it relates to the concept of the Anthropocene age. The exhibition title functions as a framework to reflect on this proposed term for the period of time when significant human impact on the Earth has been greater than ever before and provides an additional lens through which these works can be viewed. Both artists have an on-going interest in the complex relationship between humans and the natural world. Derrick Piens’ sculptures and paintings take influence from nature through the formation of crystals, meteors and botanical life, while Angelopoulos’s abstracted forms seem to be imbued with their own life force, evoking human emotion and behaviour. Angelopoulos and Piens give a physical presence to emotional and psychological states where colour, gesture and form in combination with thought-provoking titles, invite the viewer to unpack these layered, open-ended narratives and consider how their own experiences can enrich the stories at play.

This two-person exhibition will be the first in the newly built Latcham Art Centre, joining the Library and other services hosted at the Whitchurch-Stouffville Leisure Centre. The gallery entrance is accessible from the main entrance of the Leisure Centre, directly opposite from the Library.
