Battle of the Brushes

The Battle of the Brushes is an exciting event hosted by the South Simcoe Arts Council each summer. Held during Alliston’s Potato Festival, an MC, live music and large crowds make it a unique and memorable experience. Artists are given 30 minutes to paint a masterpiece. The audience then votes and the top 2 from each round face off in a final round. Cash prizes are on the line!

Time & Place
The Battle will be held in the courtyard adjacent to 41 Victoria St East, Alliston on Saturday August 11th. Registration will be held from 9:00am-9:45am in time for the first round at 10am. The final round will begin at 12:00pm.

Artists of all experience levels are welcome to compete.
Registration is $5 and can be completed online at:

Competitors will be supplied with:

  • A blank 18” x 24” professional-quality canvas
  • professional-quality acrylic paint in black, white and primary colours
  • a palette and water

Artists must bring their own paintbrushes and mixing utensils/palette knives.

  • While an artist can plan their painting, no writing utensils or reference material is allowed on the day of the competition. This is the thrill of the challenge! No rulers or tape allowed.
  • Subject matter must be family-friendly.
  • Must be 16 years or older to compete.
  • All completed paintings are the property of the South Simcoe Arts Council.

Raffle Draw
All completed paintings will be raffled after the Battle of the Brushes. Raffle tickets will be sold during the event, and anyone can purchase them. The raffle draw will take place at 2pm.

Arts on Main – Juried Show

The Arts on Main Juried Exhibition is open to all established and emerging artists. Artwork will be displayed in the front windows of businesses along the main street of Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham. Art is adjudicated and prizes awarded.

This year’s theme is “A Legacy of Art.” The theme is open to the artist’s interpretation. Perhaps the legacy is one that has inspired your artwork, or perhaps it is the legacy you hope to leave for future generations.

  • Application for exhibition will be reviewed by SSAC who may request further information and clarification. The decision of the SSAC is final.
  • Work may be in any medium. Must be original work, no kits, commercial molds or reproductions will be accepted. (Reproductions, in this context refer to copies, whether mechanical or digital, of original artwork that are not intended to be the “original” piece. Exceptions to this are “limited edition prints” and photographic prints.)
  • Artists may submit up to two pieces for judging. Works must not have been exhibited in a previous SSAC show. All works will be judged and the decision of the jurors will be final.
  • SSAC will assign a business placement to each piece of artwork. Placement is at the discretion of the selection committee.
  • It is the artist’s responsibility to arrange a time with the store owner regarding the set up and take down of their art.
  • SSAC defines an “emerging” artist as one who is in the early years of their professional career and who has a small exhibition record. Must have been showing your work publically for at least 3 years.
  • SSAC defines an “established” artist as one with a body of work that has attained a fair degree of public exposure. Must have been practising professionally for at least 8 years.
  • SSAC reserves the right to accept or reject any art works on the basis of suitability and/or appropriateness. Although it is not the policy of the SSAC to censor artwork, sometimes it is necessary to review the appropriateness as it applies to the theme of the show.
  • All 2 dimensional works must be suitably wired and ready to hang. Pieces must be a maximum of 36” x 52” including frame.
  • 3 dimensional art may be subject to weight or size restrictions based on assigned location.

Application deadline: September 12
Installation: September 24-26
Exhibit Show Dates: September 27 – October 18
Pick up/Removal of artwork: October 19-20

Fees and Commissions:
Emerging artists – $15 for SSAC members, $25 for Non-members
Established artists - $25 for SSAC members, $35 for non-members

  • Upon acceptance there is no refund of the entrance fee. Entrance fee will be returned if artwork is not accepted.
  • Art sales are subject to 25% commission fee for SSAC members, and 35% for non-members. The commission will be rendered to SSAC.
  • Works not for sale must be marked NFS.
  • Art pieces that are sold shall not be removed until the end of the show.
