WORKSHOP IN JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTMAKING (MOKUHANGA)

Monday to Friday, August 13 – 17, 2018

The chief characteristic of this traditional medium is that it employs water based pigments printed on Japanese papers using authentic Japanese printing brushes and hand held barens. All tools are provided.

Beginning students will be taken through the complete process from designing to printing a small edition of their colour woodblock print on a variety of Japanese papers. In this course you will carve a key block, transfer the key block image to another block to carve second and third colours (hanshita technique). Students will learn how to prepare their paper for printing each print in perfect registration.

Materials include imported 9” x 12”Japanese shina plywood woodblock, various Japanese washi papers. Authentic Japanese tools for carving and printing will be made available to all students. Registered students will be sent an introductory PDF and requested to prepare ideas for their woodblock before the course starts. Maximum 8 students.

Artist/printmaker, Elizabeth Forrest, B.A.,B.Ed, AOCA, majored in printmaking at the Ontario College of Art where she later taught print for seven years. She moved to Kyoto, Japan in order to learn the art of Japanese woodblock printmaking also known as “mokuhanga” and subsequently has specialized in the medium. She has exhibited widely and she recently received a government of Hawaii purchase award at the International Mokuhanga Exhibition 2017 in Honolulu. Since 2014 Ellzabeth has also shown at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, Open Studio Gallery, Toronto, The Stuart Jackson Gallery, Toronto and as a artist/member, has held two solo exhibitions at the Gerrard Art Space. She has taught numerous mokuhanga workshops in Toronto, Hamilton, Moncton, Newfoundland and Montreal.
