No grades – just the fine arts and the freedom to experiment.

Our non-credit summer workshops open up the Faculty of Fine Arts to practicing artists and the general public.

Whether you want to refine your technique or develop a new area of your artistic practice, summer is the perfect time to take full advantage of Concordia’s amazing facilities and resources.

We offer 11 small group workshops that give you the chance to collaborate with like-minded participants and to connect with Concordia’s resources, facilities, and people.

June

Sound and Image Micro-School
June 11 to 15
Participants are invited to explore the concept of Time through the use of a wide array of experiences and experiments with audio-visual equipment. The micro-school features a number of explorations and excursions into Montreal to gather field recordings and raw materials to be used in the studio. This course will serve as an incubator or a lab for ideas which participants will be able to make use of in their future practice and projects.

Get Funded: presenting yourself and your artwork
June 5 to 14
Learn how to pitch your creative projects and express you ideas convincingly to funders. From in-person presentations to crowdfunding platforms, this course covers the art of the ask. While many artists are familiar with written applications, this workshop addresses how to deliver engaging in-person presentations, offering guidance around the essential ingredients for success: creating a compelling story, being clear, and speaking with passion.

Writing about your art: proposals, applications and statements
June 12 to 21
Learn how to write convincing proposals and grant applications for your creative projects, for submission to galleries, artistic and academic institutions, residencies, and more. This workshop provides guidance for specific artistic opportunities, from strategies for promoting your work and exhibitions to what to include on your website. The instructor will provide hands-on writing assistance for preparing artistic statements, and is also able to assist artists seeking to describe their work as research-creation.

July

Build a successful portfolio
July 10 to 12, 2018
Learn how to prepare a successful artist's portfolio that displays the strengths and diversity of your artistic practice and feel confident about submitting your work for a wide diversity of applications. This workshop provides guidance on how to document 2D and 3D artworks, and prepare of files for digital submission, culminating in a portfolio review clinic, where you will have the opportunity to present your portfolio and receive feedback from the workshop instructor and an invited artist.

Electronics for Artists
This series of two short workshops is designed for artists getting started or continuing to explore electronics and its possibilities.

Sun-drinkers Solar Energy Workshop
July 22
Create a simple, small sun-drinker from electronic components that can twitch, twitter or twinkle.

Crystal radio workshop
July 21
In this workshop, you will make a working radio using wire, cardboard tubes, paper clips, thumbtacks and a 25 cent germanium diode (the "cats whisker").
