Alice Teichert, Silver Lining, acrylic and crayon on canvas, 2018

Alice Teichert: text’painting

May 17 to June 30, 2018
Opening Reception, Thursday, May 17 at 7 pm
Artist will be present. Remarks at 7:45pm

Alice Teichert is a Port Hope-based artist who was born in Paris and raised in Brussels before making Canada her home in the mid-eighties. She grew up in a multi-lingual environment where language, music and art were an integral part of everyday life and these experiences inform the core of her art practice. Teichert uses the term ‘visual poetry’ to describe the way her layered paintings can be read and experienced. She builds up pigmented glazes and uses rich colours that play with light and translucency. This helps to create depth and space in each work providing a surface or ‘page’ to evoke text through glyph-like inscriptions. In the same way a musician may read a composed piece of music to play the composition, or the way traditional illuminated manuscripts use image and text to tell a story, Teichert invites the viewer to discover emotion and sensation through the perception of colour, form and text.

For her upcoming solo exhibition, text’painting at The Latcham Gallery, we are thrilled to be presenting a selection of works that trace Teichert’s commitment to exploring how gestural painting can be interpreted like text and how text can be reimagined as image. In addition to her paintings that explore these themes and ideas, the exhibition will include her 16-part composition s’pos)in( which marks the 10th anniversary of the ongoing project and will include an audio excerpt of the artist performing the work.

Please join us for the opening reception on Thursday, May 17th at 7pm, where the artist will speak about her work and perform a short excerpt from s’pos)in(.

Alice Teichert is a multi-disciplinary artist with a practice that includes painting, two and three dimensional text work, printmaking and performance. She studied in Belgium and completed her diploma in Fine Arts at the Beaux-Arts in Valence, South of France. Teichert has built an international career with over 30 solo exhibitions in France, Canada, Switzerland and Australia. Her work is in public, corporate and private collections worldwide and she is represented in Canada by Oeno Gallery in Prince Edward County and Peter Robertson Gallery in Edmonton.
