RICHMOND HILL PUBLIC LIBRARY PHOTOGRAPHER IN RESIDENCE APPLICATION:

RICHMOND HILL TAKES A SELFIE

October 16 – November 23, 2018

Richmond Hill Public Library (RHPL) invites professional visual artists working in the medium of photography to apply for its Photographer in Residence program, and to share their skills and artistic vision with the Richmond Hill community. The Photographer in Residence will participate in 6 events (including giving 4 group workshops) and, together with their students, will explore the Town of Richmond Hill. The exploration will result in a collective Richmond Hill’s “Selfie,” a group exhibition displayed at the Library. The Photographer in Residence will help with the setup of the exhibition.


PURPOSE

The Photographer in Residence program is a new initiative that fulfills the Library’s Strategic Plan to:

  • Strengthen the community’s connections with new creative resources
  • Contribute vibrant spaces for artistic exploration
  • Enrich the community’s choices with new workshops, art displays, and other art activities
  • Reinforce the Library’s capabilities to provide meaningful arts programming


OUTCOMES

The Photographer in Residence program will:

  • Create new work opportunities for artists working in the medium of photography
  • Create collaborative opportunities for artists and the Library
  • Explore the role that public libraries can play in the artistic process
  • Feature resources and venues provided by Richmond Hill Public Library
  • Explore Richmond Hill as a place and as a community
  • Create a vibrant new space for artmaking in Richmond Hill by having workshops, displays, and other art activities
  • Connect with the community to co-create new programming

DATES

The Photographer in Residence will be introduced to the community at the Ontario Public Library Week celebration on Tuesday, October 16. The Photographer will then give 4 group workshops for adults (18+) on the following Mondays: October 29, November 5, 12, 19; and will help with the exhibition setup on Friday, November 23.


APPLICATION PROCESS

Admission to the Photographer in Residence program is by application only. Please submit your Letter of Intent, Curriculum Vitae or Resume, and 5 – 10 digital files or links to your recent photographic work to programproposals@rhpl.ca, using the subject line ‘Photographer in Residence Application’.

Image requirements:

  • In .jpg file format only
  • A maximum of 1 MB file size each
  • A maximum resolution of 1024 x 768 at 75 PPI
  • Named using a “LastName_FirstName_01.jpg” format (e.g., Smith_John_01.jpg), with numbers (01, 02, 03, etc.) corresponding directly to your image script. In the image script, please provide title and date for each image.

In your Letter of Intent, please describe the following:

  • Tell us about your art (What is your artistic philosophy?)
  • Tell us about your facilitation experience (What workshops have you led before? Do you have experience with different age groups?)
  • What is your project? (How will you feature RHPL resources and/or venues? How will you engage the public? How do you suggest exploring Richmond Hill as a place and as a community? What workshop ideas do you have? Please give titles and brief descriptions that will be published on the Library’s website.)


TIMELINES

  • Applications are due May 28, 2018
  • Applications will be reviewed between May 29 – June 12, 2018
  • The residency will take place from October 16, 2018 – November 23, 2018, with 4 group workshops (for 10 – 25 adults, 18+) on Monday nights, as well as introduction on Tuesday, October 16, and the exhibition setup on Friday, November 23
  • Minimum 8 hours of workshops, not including the preparation and travel time
  • Programming schedule will be developed in conjunction with the library staff


ELIGIBILITY

The RHPL Photographer in Residence program is open to emerging, mid-career, and established professional artists working in the medium of photography, as defined by the Toronto Arts Council:

A professional artist is someone who has developed their skills through training and/or practice; is recognized as such by artists working in the same artistic tradition; actively practices his or her art; seeks payment for his/her work; and has a history of public presentation.

The photographer must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, aged 18 years or older. Preference will be given to residents of York Region.


FUNDING

RHPL will provide the total sum of $1,500 for the residency period, including artist fees, travel expenses, all materials, and any other project expenses incurred by the applicant, after the residency ends.
