In 1940, Walter Benjamin likened human history to an angel who is blown backwards, blindly into the future. The angel beholds, and is propelled by, the horrors that constitute the past. In his exhibition The Angel of History, John Haney uses this rich and revered metaphor as a lens through which to examine five male generations of his family. What is carried forward, and what is left behind? The blurry line between what is problematic and what is seductive generates the current that propels this work.

Using various analogue photographic processes, sculpture, mixed media, and text, Haney works with trace, iconography, family mythology, material, and artifacts, to explore ideas of inheritance and implication. He revisits anxieties expressed by Modernist artists and writers, to see how familiar and/or relevant those anxieties feel today.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

John Haney is a visual artist in Hamilton, Ontario. His practice is varied, spanning photography, sculpture, installation, and printmaking, but his great true loves are the darkroom-based processes of analogue photography. His work deals with stories, places, and history, all funneled through, and led by, material investigation and/or objects. He has been long-listed for the Sobey Art Award and nominated for the Scotiabank Photography Prize, and his work has been exhibited in Canada, the U.S., and Germany. He is represented by Emerson Gallery Berlin and Christina Parker Gallery; he is an original member of Assembly Gallery and a founding member of the art collective/noise-rock band SHIT PYRE. He is in Hamilton as we speak, furiously attempting to gild an old Cadillac for an upcoming exhibition at the Art Gallery of Hamilton.
