Harbourfront Centre Visual Arts
Spring 2018 Exhibitions

Until June 17, 2018

Harbourfront Centre’s spring exhibitions showcase multimedia works that contemplate time. When War is Over, curated by Sara Knelman, and a primary exhibition of the Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival, features the project of London-based photographer and educator Daniel Alexander. When War is Over investigates contemporary ideas of permanence, process and the legacies of ongoing commemoration looking closely at The Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Also part of the Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival is LIKE WATER, A WINDOW – a series of photographs by Montreal-based photographer and musician Tess Roby. Using 35mm film, Roby’s images invoke dreamlike scenes out of everyday occurrences, capturing the passage of time with the grain of analog technology.

Also on display is The Teasers and the Tormentors, a 3D animation by Toronto-based artist Luke Painter. A consistent work in progress, The Teasers and the Tormentors travels across different time periods, referencing set designs from 20th century theatre, film productions and illusion magic show techniques. The title refers to the vertical and horizontal borders (often the stage curtains) on a theatre stage that change the size and shape of the stage view. Through the use of mirrors in the 3D animation of this work, the viewer’s perspective shows the action outside of the camera frame, providing a sense of awareness of the space beyond the set.
