A Multimedia Art Exhibit at Fashion Art Toronto 2018

| APRIL 17 - 21, 2018 | WWW.FASHIONARTTORONTO.CA |

Fashion Art Toronto presents an exceptional art program across five festival nights, April 17-21, 2018 at Daniels Spectrum in Toronto. The impressive line-up of artists take both a critical and experimental look at fashion and pop culture, showcasing their work in three distinct programs: multi-disciplinary installation exhibit, performance series and photography exhibition.

INSTALLATION EXHIBITION

Artist projects interpret fashion, body and beauty, deciphering the 2018 festival theme CONNECT across gender, class, culture, religion, occupation, and attitudes. A virtual & on-site multimedia experience where fashion meets art; crafted into an onsite labyrinth of installation art, fashion film and photography exhibits that explore fashion from a social, environmental and conscious standpoint.

Highlights

Together, enveloped and bare, explores the fragility and absurdity of the body and mind, as well as the connective possibilities of materiality. By combining familiar collective motifs with organic, bodily forms, like ceramics and sheer fabrics, artist Jill Smith calls into question how one both exists and performs as a social body.

Nature x Nature: In Spite of Sirens is a large scale performative installation piece by Olayide Abiola that distills the architectural language of sacred spaces of worship from temples to churches into a fundamental form and component, as the basis for its environment, congregation and connection.

PERFORMANCE SERIES

Each night, Fashion Art Toronto presents cutting-edge, dynamic and forward-looking performances in dance, music and performance art, exhibiting how fashion can extend its borders beyond the runway.

Highlights

Swiss Artist, Geneviève Favre Petroff presents Vocalize Me, performing in a large automated mechanical dress that is synced with her voice. Evoking Fashion History and Political heritage the artist pays tribute to the democratization of culture and questions the use we make of technology and communication.

REVENANT is an electrifying runway performance that merges dark elements of fashion, music, dance and voguing. In an attempt to punish those who practice the queer arts, a corrupt government force has enslaved and tortured all those deemed “dangerous to society”. The last of their kind, The Coven clan must utilize all the elements of vogue movement to conjure an inner strength to free themselves from social injustice in this dystopian future.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

The photography exhibition presents artists who interpret ideas around fashion, culture, identity, sexuality and environment that are all consistent within this year’s theme, CONNECT.

Highlights

Soft Shells is a photography portrait series by Libby Oliver that catalogues an individual with every item of clothing they own. This work arises from the artists’ interest in artificiality, visual power relationships and indexing a person through their belongings. Through this series she explores the tension point between a person’s curated individuality and her personal manipulation of their aesthetic.

Artist Franco Berti, creates collages of ready-made fashion imagery, through Vacuo Amour. The series challenges the way a viewer might take for granted what they perceive in a photographed image, creating blurry non-subjects hard to identify, an obscure representation, which feels oddly familiar but insurmountably other. Can we still connect to these images?

The event is produced with the support of the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council. We would also like to thank venue sponsor Artscape, Hair Sponsors, Spellbound Hair Design & Lisa Tuff, Rachel Jones B Pretty Makeup, Steam Whistle Brewery, VQA Wines, the photography and videography teams of Tarsipix, Indipro and NXTLVL and all the front-of-house and behind the scenes volunteers.
