Rah
SuperNova

April 26-May 9, 2018
Opening Reception: Thursday April 26th from 6-8:00 pm

The Artlab Gallery is pleased to present the MFA thesis exhibition SuperNova, a new video installation by Iranian-Canadian digital and performance artist Rah. As an Iranian diasporic woman, Rah examines the values and ideologies of two different and occasionally oppositional sets of social norms and beliefs. She critiques the visual stereotypes and performative aspects that shape female gender identity and Iranian ethnic identity. Rah not only focuses on the means by which individuals express such identities but also critiques the value and legitimacy of identity and cultural expression. While performing racial and cultural stereotypes, Rah focuses on fantasy – be it the viewer’s or her own – in an attempt to force the viewer to reflect on their relationship with the racialized female body.

Artist Biography

Rah completed her undergraduate degree in fine arts at the University of Ottawa and is currently a Master of Fine Art candidate at Western University. Rah’s work has been exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally at spaces including Museum London, Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa), The Power Plant (Toronto), XSpace Cultural Centre (Toronto), SAW Gallery (Ottawa), Williams College Museum of Art (Williamstown, Massachusetts), Miami Art Basel, Nieuwe Vide (Haarlem, Netherlands), Pao Festival (Oslo, Norway), Kunst Am Spreeknie (Berlin, Germany), Kunsthaus Graz Museum (Graz, Austria), and Onassis Cultural Center (Athens, Greece). She has been the recipient of numerous awards including Canada Council for the Arts Travel Grants, Conseil Des Arts et Des Lettres Du Quebec Research/Production grants, an Ontario Graduate Scholarship, and a SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship. She has been awarded several residencies including the Koumaria Residency (Greece, 2016), AX Gallery (Berlin, 2016), MUU Galleria (Helsinki, 2015), and Studio Das Weisse Haus (Vienna, 2014). Rah is represented by Vtape, Canada’s leading artist-run distributor for video art.
