Job Description

Ensuring that C Magazine meets its strategic goals and priorities, the Managing Editor (“Editor”) is responsible for overseeing the educational program, of which publishing C Magazine is the primary activity. As the principal editor and manager of the editorial team, the Editor is responsible for the production of each quarterly issue through to the final press proof. They work closely with the Editorial Director (a part-time position) to fulfil the magazine’s editorial vision and shape its content, and with the Publisher to produce the magazine and its associated educational programs. As a key public representative, the Editor plays an essential role in developing C Magazine’s local and international profile and makes a valuable contribution to the record of Canadian and international contemporary art.


Primary Responsibilities

  • The Managing Editor is responsible to the authority of the Board of Directors of C The Visual Arts Foundation and supervised by the Executive Director and Publisher (“Publisher”).
  • The Editor supports C Magazine’s editorial vision and is accountable to the annual Editorial Plan; commissions articles, substantive edits and proofreads, researches images and rights, coordinates the approval of galleys and the printer’s proof;
  • Manages the editorial staff and interns; manages the editorial schedule and is accountable for all its deliverables; adheres to the publishing schedule; maintains editorial documents, records and contracts; manages and adheres to editorial and programming budgets;
  • Participates in the development of the magazine’s identity; drafts and edits key marketing and communications material; moderates and participates in public events and online as a representative of C Magazine;
  • Writes the artistic and educational program sections of grant applications and reports, and edits grants as required;
  • Manages and delivers C Magazine’s public education programs, including events related to magazine content, supplementary publications, panels, lectures, workshops, the annual C New Critics Award, and editorial internships;
  • Sits on the foundation’s Educational Program Committee to oversee the development of more extensive public education programs, such as symposia or youth programs, and participates in the delivery of these as time allows.


Required Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in art history or critical and curatorial studies, or closely related studies is required, or equivalent qualifications and experience relevant to the duties of the role
  • Minimum 5 years combined art writing, writing for magazines and editing, related to contemporary art.
  • Experience in working with freelance writers on substantive edits is an advantage
  • Minimum 3 years working in contemporary art institutions or related organizations, in areas of exhibition curation, program management or communications
  • Significant current involvement in the non-profit sector and artist-run culture is preferred
  • Evidence of working effectively with colleagues, board members, partners and the public
  • Recognized experience in local and national art communities, with diverse networks
  • Experience in the international art community with well-developed networks is preferred
  • Productive working relationships with artists, writers and art world peers
  • Experience writing successful grant applications and project proposals
  • Experience in oversight of staff or volunteers
  • Experience with hiring, motivating and developing a highly capable team is preferred
  • Additional experience in working with collectors and donors is an advantage


Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Superior writing and excellent substantive editing skills
  • Extensive knowledge and engagement with discourses in contemporary Canadian and international art, in a range of media and disciplines
  • Well-developed ability to research, gather and evaluate information
  • Understanding of the application of strategic planning
  • Advanced project management, planning and organizational skills
  • Self-directed with proven ability to prioritize, assign and execute multiple tasks simultaneously and meet numerous ongoing deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills, including public speaking
  • Ability to represent C Magazine publicly and within the professional visual arts sector
  • Understanding of the important role of funders, sponsors and donors in the arts
  • Knowledge of the management of staff and volunteer resources
  • Knowledge of editorial guidelines and standards, including familiarity with the Chicago
  • Manual of Style or Canadian Press Style
  • Computer skills suitable for an Apple, Google Apps and Adobe environment
