The Art Gallery of Mississauga and Visual Arts Mississauga have collaborated to present this annual exhibition since 1987. Now in its 40th year, the VAM Annual Juried Show of Fine Arts is an opportunity for members of the regional visual arts community to showcase their work alongside their peers, and for art enthusiasts to discover the wealth of talent in the region. This year the jury reviewed 160 submissions from artists across Ontario, and selected 40 finalists.

The AGM and VAM are most grateful to the 2018 jury: John Armstrong, Jayne Wilkinson and Faisal Anwar. The variety of selected works highlights a wide range of creative expression.

Special thanks to our VAM40 Awards Sponsor, DeSerres.

At the opening reception on January 11, the following awards were presented to artists in the 40th Annual Juried Show of Fine Arts with comments from the 2018 Jurors:

FIRST PRIZE: Sophie Sabet, Though I am Silent, I Shake, HD Video, 9 mins, 2017.
“Sophie Sabet’s evocative video reveals, through the details of a family home, the challenging communications of a mother and daughter as they attempt to discuss family life, art practice, gendered divisions of labour, and identity. Playing with ideas of visibility and concealment through the repeating trope of hanging laundry and intimate close-ups, the work reminds us of the ways in which families can be fractured by the difficulties of relating across generations.”

SECOND PRIZE: Simone Sicard, Process #1, Acrylic and ink on board, 2017.
“Simone Sicard’s meticulous large ink drawing on a gessoed surface depicts a large cloud or biomorphic form (think several amoebas seen under a microscope) composed of tiny triangular forms.”

THIRD PRIZE: Joanna Strong, A Walk Over the Hills in Changeable Weather, Oil on canvas, 2017.
“Joanna Strong has chosen to paint, ever so carefully, the modest subject of a ball of elastic bands. In a nod to the memento mori tradition of still-life painting, her subject is both beautiful — there is a wide range of colours and bits of text on the elastic bands — and transitory — elastic bands only last so long before they lose their stretch and usefulness.”

HONOURABLE MENTION: Saša Rajšić, To Un-Become Bosnia, Photograph, 2017.
“This photograph masterfully deploys light and shadow to suggest the trauma that results in the aftermath of armed conflict.”

CURATOR’S CHOICE: Lori Ryerson, The Window, Giclee print on Hahnemuehle photo rag paper, 2017. Laura Carusi, Curatorial and Collections Coordinator at the AGM selected this work as her Curator’s Choice.

“Lori Ryerson’s photograph is nostalgic and chilling in its stark representation of a familiar domestic scene made strange. Its symmetry and harsh aesthetic call to mind images in art history which feel distinctly Canadian. One cannot see through the window, although it feels as if one can easily imagine what is pictured beyond the threshold.”
