SYLVIE ADAMS
LE TEMPS, LA MARQUE, L’ESPACE - THE TIME, THE MARK, THE SPACE

Opening reception: January 18th, 5pm to 7pm
Exhibition from January 18 to March 25, 2018

After exhibiting internationally and in prestigious contemporary art fairs - including Miami, New York, London and Singapore - Sylvie Adams will present for the first time in Montreal an exhibition of paintings representing several years of practice.

This body of work is the result of an exploration of time and gravity as tools of plastic research in the same way as the brush and the mark. By letting those elementary forces act on the painting, chance is introduced and thus are created fortuitous traces on the canvas. These traces become the basis of a dialogue with the work, which continues and is completed with gestural and thoughtful marks. You can find contradictory impulses, tensions and fragile equilibriums, creating a sensation of depth that leads to contemplation.

The viewer is invited to navigate through transitional zones alternating between violence and softness. The result is non-landscapes with paradoxical forms, with borders both defined and denied. The artist invites the eye to travel through atmospheric scenes, beyond the physical matter in a suspended temporality, seeking to engage feelings and intellect.

This exhibition will consist of some fifteen works, and a brochure on the exhibition will be available, written by Hugues Brouillet curator and art critic.
