The New Art Examiner presents a revision of art history by MIKLOS LEGRADY

The curious case of Marcel Duchamp

image
Miklos Legrady - 33" x 49" - 83.82cm x cm x 124.46cm, acrylic on cardboard. Sept. 24, 2015.

Duchamp wanted to base painting on ideas instead of senses, but ideas belong to literature, ideas are what we write down, while visual language pairs with the image. Rejecting one’s sense was senseless, insensible, nonsense and destroyed his motivation to make art. Duchamp retired to play chess but for the next twenty years he poked at Étant donnés as if trying to revive a lost relationship. On this note, Duchamp often said the Readymade were not art but a pastime, chosen because they could not be art.

The New Art Examiner, an independent magazine of art and cultural criticism, was founded in Chicago in 1973. The magazine is not only a significant part of the history of art and criticism in Chicago, it made important contributions to the larger history of art and cultural criticism in the United States by promising—and delivering—an often sharp-edged critique.

A new voice in art criticism, Miklos Legrady is a visual artist, scholar, anti-hero and protagonist who is expecting trouble. He steps out of the art world’s blind spot, deconstructing cultural myths and fictions. Emerging as a hybrid between technical wizard, ad buster and poli-sci commentator, he moves through a world of political, social, and cultural intrigue. Like the Energizer Bunny, Legrady just keeps on going and going. Legrady is now Toronto Editor for the New Art Examiner, Chicago.
