Victor Romão – New Works

October 4 to November 11
Opening Reception: Thursday October 5, 6pm to 8:30pm
Artist Talk: Saturday October 28, 2pm to 3pm

Join us this October at SB Contemporary Art for a new exhibition, Victor Romão - New Works. Romão is a long-standing artist with the gallery and has been represented since 2011. Many of you have seen his work and practice develop over the years, and we are excited to present this new body of work that has not yet been seen by the public. The drawing technique and the draftsmanship of Romão's work has become a signature style depicting a subject matter that is often unusual, uncomfortable, and at times scary. In a review by Terence Dick (2012), Romão's work exhibited at 129 Ossington, Toronto was compared and discussed in relation to the practice of contemporary artist, Shary Boyle.

When contemplating Romão's past and current work other art historical imagery by artists, Hieronymus Bosch and Francis Bacon come to mind. Frances Bacon in writing about the artists’ creative process once stated, “I feel ever so strongly that an artist must be nourished by his passions and his despairs. The feelings of desperation and unhappiness are more useful to an artist than the feeling of contentment, because desperation and unhappiness stretch your whole sensibility.”

Romão’s exhibiton runs from Wednesday Oct 4 to Saturday November 11. We hope you can also join us for an informal talk and conversation with the artist on Saturday October 28, from 2 to 3pm. Please contact the gallery with any questions about the exhibition and purchase inquires at 519-819-0536 or you can email us at

Artist Statement

Living in a small rural Southwestern Ontario town has greatly influenced the subject matter I research and depict in my art work. I fuse my experiences of living in a rural setting with my investigation of the themes of: fear, otherness and male violence. I bring to light facets of rural behaviours that might otherwise escape the attention of non-rural communities. Through the creation of two and three-dimensional artworks, I hope to provide viewers with an encounter that simulates my attraction/repulsion to various aspects of North American rural life.

Victor Romão is a Canadian visual artist based in Essex County, Ontario. He holds a B.Ed, B.F.A and M.F.A from the University of Windsor and has participated in solo and group exhibitions across Canada, the U.S., Japan and New Zealand. He is interested in a variety of practices, which focus on drawing, sculpture and print media. His years spent living in Southwestern Ontario, have acted as the catalyst for his present interest in exploring the topics of fear, otherness, and male violence within rural communities.
