Catherine Mellinger, Scuba, 2016.

Catherine Mellinger: Deep Salt Water

September 22–November 5, 2017
Reception: Friday, September 22, 7pm
Catherine Mellinger and Marianne Apostolides in Conversation: Sunday, October 22, 1:30pm
Location: Open Sesame, 220 King Street West, Kitchener, ON

Catherine Mellinger's mixed-media collage works create something of beauty from what might not be perceived as beautiful: trauma, loss, and mental illness. This suite of collages, created for the book Deep Salt Water (BookThug, 2017) by Marianne Apostolides, began with an exchange between the artist and writer based on a series Mellinger created to explore her experience with clinical postpartum anxiety.

Throughout Deep Salt Water, a stirring memoir of abortion, love, and loss, Apostolides layers imagery from the ocean, connecting its pollution and imperilled life with a personal grief. Mellinger's mixed-media collages work within the construct of this story to ask us to pause and reflect on a woman's personal power and the loss of her power, partnered with the loss of our world's largest resource: the ocean.

About the artist:

Catherine Mellinger is a collage and mixed-media artist, arts facilitator, and Expressive Arts Therapist. Her works have been published in literary magazines, and she has been commissioned by musicians, writers, and private collectors. Mellinger lives in Waterloo, Ontario, with her husband and son. Anna van Milligen: <3

Opens September 22, 2017
Reception: Friday, September 22, 7pm
Location: Open Sesame, 220 King Street West, Kitchener, ON (King Street windows)

CAFKA – Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area and Open Sesame launch their new collaboration, Lèche Vitrine: Open Sesame Project Window, with Anna van Milligen's <3.

Printed on vinyl and affixed to Open Sesame's King Street windows, van Milligen's photographic installation reflects the artist's longstanding interest in the construction and performance of feminine identity as well as this medium's associations with advertising and publicity. For CAFKA, the Lèche Vitrine project space is an opportunity to support new art forms and to celebrate emerging artists and experimental work.

About the artist:

Anna van Milligen is a Canadian-American installation artist who lives and works in Guelph, Ontario. Her choice of media includes fake hair, faux fur, and dollar-store beauty enhancements. Van Milligen received her BFA in 2013 from Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and her MFA in 2016 from the University of Waterloo.

Lèche Vitrine is made possible with the support of the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund.
