Xiaojing Yan
Out from among the tranquil woods
September 23, 2017 – January 7, 2018

Markham-based Xiaojing Yan is known for her intricate sculptural installations that explore the intersections of the natural and cultural worlds. Her work is at once simple and complex; concrete and abstract; personal and universal. The material qualities of her work, significant on both aesthetic and conceptual levels, are at the core of her practice. She transforms lingzhi mushrooms, star anise, freshwater pearls and cicadae, among others, to explore traditional Chinese mythology and folklore. Ultimately, Yan revisits her own identity as a first generation Canadian, while offering contemporary perspectives on issues of mortality, belonging and contemplation.

About the artist

Xiaojing Yan is a Chinese-Canadian artist working and living in Markham, ON. She received an M.F.A in Sculpture from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, USA and a B.F.A. from Nanjing Arts Institution, China. Yan’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums internationally including Durham Art Gallery, Durham; Katzman Contemporary, Toronto; The Latcham Gallery, Stouffville; Mississauga Art Gallery, Mississauga; Lonsdale Gallery, Toronto; TRUCK Contemporary Art, Calgary; Plug In Contemporary, Winnipeg; Surrey Art Gallery, Surrey; Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant, Brantford; Artspace, Peterborough; and many more. Her work was also featured at Art Toronto in both 2012 and 2014. The Varley Art Gallery in Markham, Ontario will present her major solo exhibition in 2017; and Suzhou Museum will present her first solo museum exhibition in China in January 2018.

Zev Farber, Composited illustration of details from works included in Machine Fantasies/Human Events (2017).

Present | Perfect | Continuous
Featuring works by Zev Farber
September 23, 2017 – January 7, 2018

To celebrate our 20th anniversary, a year-long rotation of our most popular works by F.H. Varley will be on view in the Collections Gallery. In addition, selected interventions by contemporary artists will bring new insights to the study of F.H. Varley’s work from our collection. This fall, Zev Farber presents Machine Fantasies/Human Events, a project that examines the intersection of art, technology and family memory. Comprised of sound, drawing and sculptural elements, this new site-specific work explores ideas of emission/transmission/reception as a way of collapsing varied moments and narratives from the last half-century.

About the artist

Zev Farber is an interdisciplinary artist based in Richmond Hill, Ontario. He completed his undergraduate degree in music at the University of Toronto and received an MFA in visual art from York University. Over the past decade, Farber has exhibited, performed and published work in a wide variety of settings in Canada, Australia, the United States and South Korea. In summer 2017, a new work - Endless Nameless - appeared in the 5th annual Vector Festival organized by InterAccess in Toronto. In addition, he actively collaborates with many artists and musicians on notable commissioned projects. Farber has been a recent recipient of grants from the Ontario Arts Council. He has been teaching in the field of new media art since 2009 and currently leads interactive and generative media courses at OCAD University in Toronto, while also running OCAD U's Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers.

The artist gratefully acknowledges funding support for this exhibition from the Ontario Arts Council.
