The City of Peterborough invites artists to submit proposals for the installation of an outdoor mural in Peterborough, Ontario.

This call is open to professional artists working in the following Ontario counties: Peterborough, Northumberland, Durham, Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton, Hastings, Lennox & Addington, Frontenac and Prince Edward Counties.

Deadline: Friday, July 14th, 2017 (Midnight)

Project Background and Intent

The City of Peterborough’s Public Art Program helps to create culturally enriched public spaces that foster a sense of place and an emotional attachment to Peterborough’s urban and natural environment.

This is the second phase of a five-year initiative, conceived in partnership with the Downtown Business Improvement Association (DBIA), to commission public art murals on private sites in the city’s core. The projects are intended to generate and continue interest and awareness of public art in the downtown.

The Downtown Mural Project will support innovative proposals from both emerging and established artists working in a range of disciplines and media. Artworks may be created directly on the wall or on panels affixed to it (Site Inspection Dependent). The mural will remain on site for a period of up to five years from execution, giving the property owner the option to renew the term thereafter in five-year increments.

Beyond improving the appearance of the chosen location, the artwork should in some manner consider the community in which it will be installed and include engagement with the staff and clients at the 2017 host site — YES Shelter for Youth and Families. More information about the site can be found on the YES shelter’s website and in the videos links provided.

Location

The 2017 downtown mural site is the east-facing brick facade of the YES Shelter for Youth and Families. The wall measures approximately 1271 square feet and is highly visible both to pedestrian and vehicular traffic. It is located at 196 Brock Street, adjacent to a municipal parking lot. The expected completion of the artwork is autumn 2017.

Selection Process & Criteria

A selection committee composed of five (5) voting members will vet all submissions. The selection committee will include a representative from the YES Shelter for Youth and Families and two members of the Public Art Advisory Committee, and two members at large with interests or expertise in contemporary art, architecture, design, engineering, history, or cultural tourism. The selection committee will choose a finalist whose work and experience best suits the scope of this project, and who has demonstrated an ability to realize a public artwork appropriate to the location. In addition to artistic merit and viability, proposals will be judged in relation to the City of Peterborough’s Municipal Cultural Plan and Public Art Initiative.

Experience with outdoor murals and a history of public art projects will be considered an asset. Preference will be given to projects that are appropriate for participation from clients of the YES Shelter for Youth and Families, and to artists with a demonstrated experience and willingness to work with participants of all ages and abilities.
