Visual Arts News – Summer 2017

ON THE COVER: Feast for Thought: Stephanie Yee, profile by Jonathan Rotsztain.

CODES + SYMBOLS
In this issue of Visual Arts News, many of our featured artists explore the impact and potential of the communication technology we use. Artists Jordan Bennett and Ursula Johnson use smartphones as a tool to revive the Mi’kmaq language. Others critique the impact of our communication tools. Photographer Lorraine Field argues that we’ve come to view death as a sort of obsolescence - a failure of our bodies to keep pace with a plugged-in world. And Marilou Lemmons and Richard Ighby take pervasive symbols of productivity and flip them on them on heads to expose the absurdity of our output-obsessed culture.

PLUS
Amery Sandford’s complex relationship with Newfoundland identity by Craig Francis Power; Rachel Morouney’s funerary jars by Kathleen Higgins; Feminist data visualization and the politics of information by Amanda Shore; Landon Mackenzie’s personal creative process by Ray Cronin.

LOOKING BACK, LOOKING FORWARD: 40 YEARS
Chris Shapones, our NSCAD Research Intern (now Summer Research Coordinator), has been looking back at the archives of Visual Arts News and other publications, galleries, and organizations around Nova Scotia. Read all posts, including the most recent one, which revisits a powerful 1990s exhibition and asks why we're not seeing more Black artists in galleries in Nova Scotia. And stay tuned for regular postings throughout the summer.

Go to our EXHIBITION LISTINGS to see what’s on now across the Atlantic region.
