Cosima von Bonin: Who's Exploiting Who in the Deep Sea?
26 March – 28 May 2017
Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens

Cosima von Bonin, SCALLOPS (DARK VERSION), ROCKING, 2014. Courtesy of the artist and Petzel, New York.

Who's Exploiting Who in the Deep Sea? explores Cosima von Bonin's ongoing fascination with the ocean, a theme that is commonly evoked in her works but rarely made explicit. The opposing forces of the sea—both a mysterious underworld and a site of sun-seeking vacationers—operate as a metaphor throughout much of the influential artist's practice, manifested here through a selection of works from 2008 onwards. Ranging from sculptures of creatures like crabs and sharks to a larger-than-life bikini, von Bonin's cast of characters present a host of contradictions, weaving together humour with melancholy, softness with hardness, and access with exclusion.

Diviniti, Mary Messhausen, produzentin and Simone Junker will perform throughout the opening on March 26th.

Co-curated by SculptureCenter Curator Ruba Katrib and Glasgow International Director Sarah McCrory. The exhibition is organized by Glasgow International and SculptureCenter, New York.

This exhibition is part of Germany @ Canada 2017, Partners from Immigration to Innovation.
Cosima von Bonin is a guest of the Goethe-Institut.

Sojourner Truth Parsons: Holding Your Dog At Night
26 March – 28 May 2017
Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square

image
Sojourner Truth Parsons, Self portrait at my best friends mansion, 2016. Courtesy of the artist and Downs & Ross, New York.

With their canny palette and crude perspective, the paintings of Sojourner Truth Parsons readily dispense with distinctions between interior and exterior worlds. Rendering the atmospheric and emotive energies she encounters as lucidly as physical truths, the Canadian-born, Los Angeles-based artist observes a broad affective terrain in her work, detailing the dizzy indulgences of glamour and money as gamely as the dark heat of shame. For her show at Oakville Galleries, her first in a museum, Parsons will present a survey of her recent work in painting.

HOTNUTS: WHAT THE DUCK featuring DIVINITI

Saturday 25 March 2017, 10:30 pm
The Garrison (1197 Dundas Street West, Toronto)
Hosted by Mary Messhausen, DJs produzentin and das hussy

What the duck is going on?! Does it feel like an old tomato? Who can never be sure? The only thing we know is that we need Diviniti. We're very happy she accepted our invite to perform at Hotnuts. It's truly going to be Detroit in the house. Diviniti's soulful vocals are on collaborations with DJ Minx, Piranhahead and Omar-S. Her voice can also be heard on the recently Grammy nominated Louie Vega album Starring...XXVIII. We've been clothed for repairs for too long. Now it's time to dress up again: have an haute meal with your oat couture. Or just Carey like Mariah. Are you ready to where? It's a long way to Bongolia so we shall not forget—where there is a smonk there is fire! WTD.

Hotnuts is Toronto's infamous house & disco party where dressing up/down/inside-out is an essential part of the night. The party is run by dj produzentin and hostess Mary Messhausen. In addition to the best local qweens, the Hotnuts stage has been taken by Hard Ton (Venice, Italy), CHRISTEENE (Austin, TX), Shaun J. Wright & Alinka (Chicago), Poisonous Relationship (Glasgow, UK), Macy Rodman (NYC) and Nomi Ruiz (NYC). All species and LGBTTIQQ2S are welcome to join the Hotnuts multiverse.
