Leading up to the C Magazine Auction over ten members of the board, staff and auction advisory have posted their thoughts about a favourite artwork at

Lot 29: Nika Fontaine Schnell Schnell #8, Accelerators Vol. 1 series, 2015: From her ongoing Accelerators series, Nika Fontaine’s Schnell Schnell #8 marries glitter, a kitschy crafting material, with glue to create a dizzying burst of energy on canvas. Fontaine's quick execution of these works, arriving out of necessity given the material’s quick drying time, captures the artist's’ preparatory transcendental meditative state. Fontaine's play with the traditional medium of painting gifts us something new and unexpected. Described by Fontaine as “condensed universes in which one has to dive into”, I can’t help but find myself taken into the realm of the metaphysical when looking at her work. – Dory Smith, Auction Co-Chair, C Board Member

Lot 12: John Monteith, Untitled, 2016: It is easy to be deceived by the absolute simplicity of Untitled #2. Working within a new body of loom woven work, interdisciplinary artist John Monteith explores the expressive potentiality of fabric. Rows of ‘found’ fabric - cotton, silk, and other fibres - are woven firmly and deliberately into a work of geometric abstraction. At the same time, Monteith’s interest in the multiple layers of personal relationships and the urban spaces we inhabit are in quiet dialogue, making the work both thought provoking and compelling. He has found a way of giving shape to absence. – Susan Walker Dime, C Magazine Auction Advisory Committee member

Lot 13: M E Sparks, Yellow Striped, 2017: I have no idea what I'm looking at here, which is a position of viewership I tend to prefer. Am I laying under an awning gazing up, or about to sit down to a dinner that has yet to be served? Oh, I remember: I spilled my sangria and it is seeping in to the tablecloth, running over the edge of the table and puddling on to the floor. But perhaps this painting isn't about any of my memories, and what I'm looking at are stripes of colour, their tonal and directional changes indicating nothing more than decisions of composition and pattern. In this case I’m just as pleased. – Jeremy Laing, C Magazine Auction Advisory Committee member

This year’s specially created C Auction Edition, a gift to our first 40 ticket purchasers, is generously supported by La Fondation Emmanuelle Gattuso. “Gut Vase” by Jennifer Rose Sciarrino, is a multi-purpose vessel in the shape of a human stomach, cast and fired in ceramic with a vivid pink glaze. The stomach/gut is one of active organs in the perception of human emotion and is simultaneously a vessel or ecosystem for the most essential bacteria in our body. Our stomachs begin our digestion of nutrients and our gut reaction in our interpretation of the world.

The C auction is presented with the generous support of Bonhams Canada, Chair-man Mills, Division Gallery, La Fondation Emmanuelle Gattuso, Grolsch, Les Louises Fine Foods, Museumpros Art Services, Sonic Print, Superframe, TD Bank and Toronto Image Works.
