The Art Gallery of Ontario is pleased to announce Will Kwan as the first Artist-in-Residence of 2017
About the AGO Artist-In-Residence Program
The Artist-in-Residence Program fosters connections between the AGO and Toronto-based contemporary artists, encouraging new forms of expression and audience engagement. The first of its kind at a major Canadian art institution, the program engages directly with the art community, while creating an experience for visitors that is unique and intimate. Artist projects may take various forms, including performances, events, talks, pop-up installations and gallery interventions.
January 23 – April 28, 2017
Will Kwan is a Hong Kong-born, Canadian media artist whose work examines the ways that inequality is created and perpetuated through economic systems and cultural narratives. During his residency, Kwan will plan a new intervention in Toronto’s financial district and conduct research within the AGO’s collection to explore questions of scale within sculpture and landscape paintings.
Kwan’s work has been presented at the 2014 Folkestone Triennial, 2010 Liverpool Biennial, 2007 Montreal Biennale, 2003 Venice Biennale, and MoMA PS1. He is an Associate Professor in Studio Art at the University of Toronto Scarborough and graduate faculty in Visual Studies at the University of Toronto St. George.
