The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art invites applications for the position of:

Assistant Director

The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art is a non-profit artist-run centre in Kelowna, BC. Our mandate is to support the development of innovative contemporary work by local, national and international emerging and mid-career artists. The Alternator operates three exhibition spaces, hosts an artist co-op program and facilitates a number of weekly and monthly community-based arts events.

Working under the Artistic and Administrative Director, the employee will help manage daily operations of the Alternator. The preferred applicant will have both education and experience in the visual and media arts and familiarity with artist-run centres. He/she is an engaging, highly responsible team player with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and is able to demonstrate personal initiative and leadership within a collective environment. For the right candidate, this position offers an excellent opportunity to develop skills in arts administration and has potential for internal advancement.

Major responsibilities include: assisting with the management of the Alternator’s day-to-day operations including human resources, administrative duties, exhibition logistics, installation and maintenance, and offer support to the Artistic and Administrative Director in grant applications, fundraising and programming activities.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Undergraduate degree in Fine Arts, Media, Design or a related field (Postgraduate degree highly desirable, but not necessary)
  • Outgoing personality with an interest in networking and developing new relationships for the gallery
  • Eagerness and aptitude to work both independently and part of a team
  • Physical ability and knowledge to perform preparatory and installation work, including basic curatorial knowledge
  • Capacity to work within both creative and traditional business domains
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Familiarity with the Mac environment, including Word,and Excel (Adobe In-Design, Photoshop and Illustrator an asset, but not necessary)
  • Experience in basic accounting
  • Professional experience in an arts environment, preferrably in the context of an artist-run centre

Remuneration: $21,216 per annum – approx. 24 hours per week
