Boarding House Gallery Presents:
Carlo Cesta: 50 Gallons

image

October 8 - 29, 2016
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 15, 2pm

50 Gallons features a suite of recent sculptures that draw upon the provisional constructions created to reserve curbside parking space in congested urban centers. Through a simple and casual arrangement these modest constructions repurpose abandoned objects into markers that symbolize the unauthorized expansion of the private into the public space. The ignored by-law violation is generally tolerated by a hyper-vigilant neighborhood patrolling property lines due in part to a recognition of its state as temporary.

Cesta's work has patrolled similar lines separating the sanctioned forms of art and architecture from impromptu infringements, misuse of official language and the transformation of prosaic objects into symbolic cultural markers to highlight the dynamic tension between multiple forms of cultural production. 50 Gallons is a volume in which an arrangement of objects establishes itself into a strategic position* in order to reserve a space in the cultural landscape, in which they find themselves, for the arrival of new forms of meaning.

*The etymology of the verb Park, contains the Middle French reference to the French parquer, which means to put (animals) in an enclosure (1380), to fortify (a camp) (1470), to establish oneself in a strategic position (1488), to set up camp (1495). OED
