Professional theatre festival returns to Newmarket’s historic Main Street

Presented by the Newmarket Main Street BIA, the Second Annual Newmarket National 10 Minute Play Festival returns to the heart of picturesque, historic Main Street, located just 40 minutes north of Toronto. After sowing the seeds in two-days of live theatre performances last July, the Festival has returned and grown to five days of plays and other activities including Playwright Readings, Actor and Director Talkbacks, Walking Tours, Artist Talks, and special discounts on dining and shopping nearby.

The Newmarket National 10 Minute Play Festival is the passion project of Artistic Director, Michael Halfin, a retired drama teacher who aims to create a new national platform for Canadian playwrights living at home and abroad. Where most theatre festivals reinterpret works of yester-years, this Festival showcases fresh, original content and provides a stage for contemporary playwrights to express, explore and experiment. Professional actors and directors from southern Ontario and elsewhere across Canada have also gained another important avenue to showcase their craft.

With the support of the Town of Newmarket, the Festival launched last summer and was quickly embraced by local residents, the business community, and those who love attending summer theatre festivals. The format of 10 minute plays also breaks the mould of the traditional theatre experience. In the course of one hour, the audience can experience six concise, fast-paced 10 minute plays, each containing a story-line unto itself.

This year, from Wednesday, July 25 to Sunday, July 29, the Festival presents a selection of 24 ten-minute plays by Canadian playwrights grouped by 4 common themes: off | BALANCE which explores what we lose and gain in life’s ledger; social | ORDERS which looks at independence, interdependence, conformity and disorder; past | DUE which takes us on a journey of longings that is overdue; and side | KICKS which exposes us to the spectrum of all types of relationships in all their complexities. The five days of festivities encourage adventurous theatrical sampling by those who are looking to socialize and experience live theatre with friends and family in picturesque historic Newmarket.
