The ReelAbilities Film Festival: Toronto

The ReelAbilities Film Festival: Toronto returns this month for the third annual Festival! RAFFTO, presented by the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre, is Canada’s largest film festival dedicated to showcasing Deaf and disability cultures on screen. The Festival will present 25 films in various venues across the city from May 29 – June 4, 2018.

The 2018 lineup includes Canadian premieres from Brazil, Canada, China, Poland, Spain, Latvia, Australia, Ireland and the U.S. In 22 new festival Films, RAFFTO lights up the small screen with tales from all over the globe, telling stories and sharing experiences through a powerful roster of films that will captivate and excite audiences.

Since its launch in 2016, RAFFTO has grown steadily by adding new programming and more films each year and has welcomed thousands of filmgoers who have come to enjoy film but also to learn about the way different people navigate the world. A jury of artists, filmmakers and curators of all abilities from Canada deliberated and selected the poignant films in this year’s lineup. The 2018 line-up can be found at http://reelabilities.org/toronto/films/.

For the first time, RAFFTO has partnered with Doors Open Toronto to participate in the city-wide weekend event. Festival favorites screening at Doors Open Toronto include three Toronto-made films: I Am, Princess Jack, and My Life in the City. Check out https://www.toronto.ca/explore-enjoy/festivals-events/doors-open-toronto/city-hall/ for more information on these free screenings.

In addition to screenings at accessible venues in Toronto, the Festival will include 7 Q&As with film talent; industry workshops; 3 panel discussions surrounding sexuality and consent, disability rights and advocacy, accessible media creation and universal design. All panel discussions or Q&As are accompanied with ASL Interpretation and/or CART services, to ensure all audience members may experience and participate in the conversations.

Each ReelEducation kit comes in an accessible format (films with open captioning) with a lesson plan that identifies the theme in each of 11 international films, at no cost to educators.

Since launching on April 1 of this year, ReelEducation has reached over 60 schools across 20 school boards in Ontario. Educators can register and access this free program by visiting http://reelabilities.org/toronto/reeleducation.
